Mrs. Catherine Carness, age 75 years, a native of Austria, and for many years a resident of Pe Ell, met a tragic death when she was struck by the west-bound passenger train at the Pe Ell avenue railroad crossing Wednesday afternoon. The unfortunate woman appears to have become confused as she approached the crossing, and in watching the movements of a freight train, failed to observe the approaching passenger train, and the engineer was unable to check his speed in time to prevent the accident. Deceaased, who was a widow, is survived by two sons, Joseph of Pe Ell, and John of Aberdeen, and three daughters, Mrs. Joseph Pierog of Doty, Mrs. Sohpia Whittaker of Hoquiam and Mrs. Bessie Whackcourt of Seattle. Funeral services were held Friday morning at the churhc of the Holy Cross, Rev. Father Toporowski officiating. Burial was in the Pe Ell cemetery.
