"Dean A. Proffitt II of Centralia, 63, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Providence Hospital in Centralia as the result of a heart attack.

Born Oct. 27, 1930, at Centralia, to Dean A. and Maxine (Wilkens) Proffitt, he had attended Longview schools, graduating from R. A. Long High School.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1950-54. He attended Washington State University, and was graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 1958. He had been a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.

Prior to its closing in 1977, he had been the third generation in the operation of Proffitt's Department Store in Centralia.

At that time he began working in real estate, later forming Dean Proffitt Associates.

His memberships included the Realtor Board; Centralia Masonic Lodge No. 63, F&AM: past president of the Centralia Rotary Club; and a member of the Centralia School Board for many years.

He was active in the Destination Centralia program and in downtown community activities.

He served two terms as the regional Babe Ruth baseball director, and was a very avid golfer.

On June 13, 1954, he married his wife of 40 years, Jean Erickson, in Morristown, NJ. She survives him at the family home. Also surviving are a son, Lt. Col. Dean A. Proffitt, III of Hawaii; a daughter, Valerie Davidson of Boise, Idaho; two grandsons; two granddaughters; a brother, Joseph of Olympia; an aunt; and many nieces and nephews.

Remembrances may be donations to the local chapter of the American Heart Association and the Children's Hospital in Seattle.

Family graveside services for Proffitt will be held in Mountain View Cemetery, Centralia. Memorial services for Proffitt will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, 501 W. Pine St., Centralia, with the Rev. Michael Moreland officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Newell-Hoerling's Mortuary in Centralia."
