Mrs. Elwa Josephine Briffett, wife of Charles H. Briffett, superintendent of the state training school, died at an early hour Monday morning, December 1, after having been bedridden for years. Mrs. Briffett was 45 years of age. She was a daughter of Mrs. Mary Dicken of this city. In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Wm. Benthien of Tacoma, and Misses Mabel and Edith Briffett of Chehalis. A sister, Mrs. D. W. Monfort, lives in Centralia, and a brother, Arthur Dicken, at Hoquiam. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the Fissel Funeral Home, Rev. W. J. Sharp officiating. Burial was at Olympia. Mr. and Mrs. Dicken, parents of Mrs. Briffett, were among the early pioneer settlers of the upper Newaukum valley, settling in the Alpha neighborhood 40 years ago, where she spent her girlhood. Mrs. Briffett in her earlier years had a wide acquaintance locally. Prior to Mr. Briffett's acceptance of the position of superintendent of the training school, Mrs. Briffett's illness began. Although confined to her bed for many years she bore her suffering with true Christian fortitude, until death came to end her suffering.
