Mrs. E. J. Mills

Mrs. E. J. Mills, believed to be the second oldest pioneer woman of the state, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. J. Lieuallen, at Rochester Tuesday. She was the widow of the late J. R. Mills, early day settler of Rochester prairie.

Mrs. Mills was born in Jackson county April 11, 1845, and crossed the plains with her parents in 1846, arriving at Waldo hills, Ore. The family came to Washington in 1857. She was married at Tumwater, near Olympia, in 1859 to R. J. Mills, member of another pioneer family. The young couple returned to Oregon until 1887, when they returned to southern Thurston county and resided in that district the past 56 years. Mrs. Mills was a cousin of Samuel T. Simpson, well known Oregon poet. She was a charter member of the Southwest Washington Pioneer association and of the Christian church at Porter.
