After an active life of nearly a century, and more than 70 years membership in the church, Father Henry P. Hurn, passed away on Friday morning, January 13, at the home of his son B. F. Hurn in Chehalis. Father Hurn, as he was affectionately called by his many friends, was born in Floyd County, Indiana in 1834. At the age of 20 years he was married to Lydia A. Hendrlcks with whom he lived more than half a century. In due time they became the parents of 8 children, three of whom survive both parents. They are B. F. Hurn and Mrs. S. M. Alexander of Chehalis and Mrs. Mary B. Hartman of Ostrander. There are also 11 grandchildren.

During the Civil War Mr. Hurn served two years in the Union army and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. He had for many years been active as an officer in and member of Joe Hooker G. A. R. post, being one of the few remaining membors of that organization.

Forty-five years ago Father Hurn settled on a homestead five miles southwest of Chehalis where he lived for 20 years. For the past 25 years he made hia home in Chehalis, where he was known to practically all the older residents.

In anticipation of his going, Father Hurn sometime ago wrote a brief review of his life from which the following was taken: "In September 1857 I was converted and united with the church and I know that God for Christ's sake pardoned my sins and from that time I have endeavored to live a Christian life, ever trusting and believing in our Heavenly Father. I have tried always to observe the Golden Rule by doing unto others as I would have them do unto me, and have lived at peace with all man kind. I have been wonderfully blessed and have now a longing desire for the rest that remains to the children of God." That rest came to him peacefully after a brief illness.

Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church of Chehalls of which he bad been a faithful member for 24 years. Until the last he was regular in his attendance upon the services of worship. The pastor, Dr. Thomas J. Gambill was assisted in the funeral services by Rev. J. H. Hazelton who offered prayer and by Judge W. A. Reynolds, wno from an acquaintance of 44 years with Father Hurn paid a beautiful tribute to him as a loyal citizen, a true friend and a faithful Christian. The last resting place of Father Hurn's remains is in Claquato cemetery at Chehalis. The large audience that gathered to honor the life of a man they loved was made up of people from far and near, from various churches and from all walks of life.
