John Hunt Passes Away at His Home at Riffe at Age of One Hundred Years

"John Hunt of Riffe, who celebrated his 100th birthday anniversary at that place September 16, died Saturday afternoon at his home, the end coming peacefully. He had been falling in health the past two months, although able to be up and around most of the time Mr. Hunt was the second Lewis county centenarian to die within a few months' time, Jim Dandy, of Adna, having passed away recently at the age of 101.

John Hunt was born near Williamsville, Ky. Later he lived in West Virginia and afterwards in Oklahoma, coming to Lewis county in 1894. He was a widower, Mrs. Hunt having died some years ago, and made his home on his place near Riffe, which he had cleared after coming to the Northwest. It was his pride that in his time he had cleared farms, developed coal mining property and had generally led an active life wherever he made his home. On the occasion of Mr. Hunt's recent birthday many friends called to extend their good wishes and congratulations.

To Mr. and Mrs. Hunt 21 sons and daughters were born. Of those, five daughters reside in Lewis county. There are Mrs. J. W. Phifer of Centralia, Mrs. Mary Harbison of Glenoma, Mrs. Frank McMahon of Swofford, Mrs. George Schoonover of Salkum and Mrs. Della Blumstrom of Glenoma; also one son Morgan Hunt of Toledo. One daughter, Mrs. Sarah Johnson, and four sons, Julius, Montaville, Asa and Stephen Hunt, live in Virginia; two other sons, Thomas and William Hunt, in Montana. There are also 50 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Ajlune church at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Rev. E. L. Whisler officiating. Burial will be in the Swofford cemetery, directed by Boone's mortuary of Chehalis.
