"Civil War Veteran Passes Away Sunday Afternoon at Family Home"

Joseph M. Jones died at the family home on St. Helens avenue in Chehalis, Sunday afternoon, February 15, death being due to the infirmities of old age. Mr. Jones who was 87 years old, was a veteran of the civil war and had been a resident of Chehalis the past 20 years. He was born in Angelica, New York, December 30, 1837. When he was five years old his parents moved to Ohio, and later to Michigan. May 16, 1867, Mr. Jones was married to Isabel L. Crofoot at Chesaning, Mich., the latter surviving him. Two children, Mrs. (?) Rosenthal and Mrs. George F. Petterson, both of Chehalis, were born from this union.

Shortly after the outbreak of the civil war, in 1861, Mr. Jones enlisted in the Second Michigan cavalry and served four years. He was discharged in 1865, having attained the rank of first lieutenant. During the administration of President Benjamin Harrison, Mr. Jones was postmaster at Grayling, Mich. In 1905 Mr. and Mrs. Jones came to Washington. Mr. Jones was one of the oldest members of the Masonic fraternity in this section, both in point of his age and actual membership, having joined the order at Chesaning, Mich., in 1864. He was a charter member of the Elks lodge in Centralia.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Sticklin Mortuary, Mrs. A. Harris of the Christian Science church being in charge. Graveside services were conducted by the Centralia Masonic lodge. Burial was at Claquato.
