Lucinda R. Hovies

Lucinda R. Mengel was born in Pennsylvania June 16, 1853. October 3, 1872, she was married to Jacob Hovies. In 1878 Mr. and Mrs. Hovies moved to Michigan, where they lived for seven years. They then moved to Aberdeen, Washington. After residing there for several years they moved to Alpha, in Lewis county. While living at Alpha Mr. Hovies had the Alpha store and postoffice. During their residence at Alpha both Mr. and Mrs. Hovies made many fast and lasting friends. Mr. Hovies retired from the grocery business about fifteen years ago; they then moved to Tacoma. Several years ago Mrs. Hovies' health began to fail her, but only a part of the time was she bedfast. Wednesday, September 9, Mrs. Hovies grew tired and laid down to rest and failed to awaken. "A precious one from us is gone; a voice we loved is stilled" -- but we are comforted for "Her soul is safe in Heaven."

It is remarkable to note that Mr. and Mrs. Hovies reared a family of four boys, Foster, Ben, Ora and Claude, and four daughters, Mrs. Nora McFadden, Mrs. Sadie Kerchen, Mrs. Gertrude Ersparmer and Mrs. Romayne Snow, and 14 grandchildren, with but one death in the family, that being one of the grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church at Onalaska Sunday at 1 o'clock, Rev. S. S. Healey of Chehalis officiating. Burial was in the Alpha cemetery.
