Mrs. Maud M. Weatherby, instructor in the Washington State training school for the past thirteen years, passed away at the St. Helens hospital in Chehalis after a brief illness at 11:15 a. m., September 23.
Maude M. Mitchell was born in Erie county, Pennsylvania, October 31, 1865, and was educated in the public schools of her native state and at Oberlin college, Oberlin, Ohio. Her career as a teacher began in her native county where she taught one year, followed by two years at Kalamazoo, Michigan. In 1894 she came to the northwest, teaching in Spokane county for a number of years, her first school in that county being at Tyler. In 1904 she went to Franklin county and taught two years at Pasco. In 1906 she transferred to the coast, teaching for two years at Roy, in Pierce county, at which place on April 18, 1908, she married the then principal of the Roy schools, George R. Weatherby. The following year she taught at Vaughn and the next at the Liberty school, near Ellensburg. In 1911-'12 she taught at Vancouver, Wash. then at Stanwood, then a year near Tacoma, then at Porter, and in 1917-'18 at Mckinley, Coos county, Ore. In September, 1918, Mrs. Weatherby joined the teaching force at the training school and for almost exactly thirteen years had taught in that institution, principally third, fourth and fifth grade work. While her preference was primary work, for which she was by preparation and nature eminently qualified, she had during her teaching experience held the position of school princial [stet] and had taught the higher grades.
Surviving are a sister, Miss Mable Mitchell of Seattle; and a brother, Walter M. Mitchell of Spokane. Deceased was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church. Funeral services will be held from the Stichlin [stet] Mortuary in Chehalis at 3 o'clock this Friday, afternoon, Rev. J. M. Paxton, of Bethany Presbyterian church in Seattle, formerly Mrs. Weatherby's pastor in Cheralis [stet] officiating. Burial will be at Claquato.
