Three Records Tumble In Lewis County B Finals

The Mossyrock Vikings took home the 1962 Lewis County B track meet title here Friday afternoon, piling up 78 points to lead the 10 team field. Their strongest challenger, Toledo, came in second with 62 points as the two teams staged a runaway for the honors.

Three records were set - the pole vault, mile run and the mile relay. An unsung junior, Jim Lakey, Napavine, was the standout performer of the day. He broke the pole vault record and took first in the high jump. Both feats were the big surprises of the afternoon on the W. F. West track.

Lakey, shunning the fiberglass pole, vaulted 11 feet, 3 inches to break the existing 10-10 1/2 mark held by Don Stroud of Winlock. his best effort in previous meets was 10 feet, 3 inches.

Lakey beat out highly - favored Humphrey of Mossyrock in the vault event. Humphrey took second with a fiberglass pole.

Lakey was one of the three double winners of the afternoon. He also won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 5 3/4 inches.

Richard Cook was the top point maker of the afternoon. he led Mossyrock to victory with 14 points - two first place wins in the high and low hurdle and second in the discus.

Milo Bowen, Toledo, was the second top point maker with 13 1/4 points. He won the broad jump, took second in the 100-dash, finished third in the shotput and ran a leg in the winning 880-relay team for the Indians.

Toldeo's Charles Brunner was the third top point maker with firsts in both sprint events and a leg in the 880-relay team.

Martin Towner competed in only one event and he broke a record ini doing so. The husky Mossyrock senior ran the mile in 4 minutes, 44.2 seconds to break the 4:48.4 mark.

Mossyrock's mile relay team of Mike Ward. Dennis Auvil, Don Faulker and Gene Flynn shattered the record with a time of 3 minutes, 47seconds. The old record, set by Mossyrock last year, was 4:03.2

The final team standings:

Mossyrock 78:Toledo 62: Morton 20 1/2: Onalaska 16 1/2: Napavine 12; Pe Ell 9: Tenino 7: Green Hill 4: and Boistfort 0:

A soft track foiled record - busting attempts. The meet was held under clear skies but the rain during the week made the track soft.

Two of the closest races were in the 180 low hurdles and the 880-relay. Both were attempts at new records that failed.

Cook won the low hurdles but was pressed hard by Dick Barker of Morton. Cook shaded Barker with a strong finish at the tape.

The 880-relay was a duel between Toledo and Mossyrock. Going into the final lap, the two anchor men came out of the exchange area at the same time.

Mossyrock's Claude Day and Toledo's Charles Brunner ma?ned stride-for-stride coming around the final turn. Brunner put on a burst of speed in the straight-away to the tape to beat Day by 10 yards to give Toledo the victory.

The first place ribbons were led by Mossyrock with six. Toledo captured five first places. Mossyrock's overall balance gave them the victory.

Lakey scored two wins for Napavine. The other blue ribbon went to George Hussey, Tenino, with a win in the discuss.

The meet was sponsored by the Chehalis Activators. The ribbons were presented by Armond Jeffs, Winlock track coach. Winlock was the 1961 champion but moved up into the Class A ranks this year.
