OLNEY J. CHASE TAKEN BY DEATH
County Probation Officer Passes Away at Veteran's Hospital in Portland

Olney J. Chase, aged 37, Lewis county probation officer, died last night at the veterans' hospital in Portland, to which he was taken several weeks ago with a severe illness. He failed to respond to treatment, and the word came from the hospital the fore part of the week that hope had been abandoned for his recovery.

Mr. Chase had served as county probation officer four years, prior to which he was employed as parole officer at the state training school in Chehalis. In addition to his duties as probation officer, he also acted as charity commissioner, having charge of the distribution of the county's relief funds. He was well liked by all with whome he came in contact, and word of his death cast a pall of gloom over the courthouse.

The deceased's father was Ivan Chase, a newspaperman at Colfax in the early days. His mother, Mrs. Mary J. Chase, has been residing with her son in Chehalis. A brother resides in California.

Funeral services will be held at the Holman chapel in Portland Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, following which Mr. Chase's body will be taken to Oregon City for interment.
