Samuel Baxter

The death of Samuel Baxter, another of Lewis county's pioneers who came to this section 40 years ago, occurred early Tuesday morning at the Pennsylvania avenue home of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Lewis. Mr. Baxter, who was 78 years of age, had been ill for many months and his death was not unexpected. Forty years ago he came to Lewis county from Leadville, Colo., and located in Winlock, where he was in business for 15 years. He was a member of the Methodist church at that place. From Winlock Mr. Baxter moved to Chehalis where he engaged in the hotel and confectionary business 20 years, retiring five years ago. He is survived by a daughter. Mrs. J. E. Lewis of Chehalis; a son, Macey Baxter of Centralia; and a brother, Mont Baxter, who lives at Coalinga, Calif.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 1:30 at the Sticklin Mortuary. Rev. E. L. Kechley of the Christian church officiated. Burial was in the cemetery at Winlock, alongside Mrs. Baxter, whose death occurred many years ago.
