Mrs. Mahala Layton was born in Fayette county, Ohio, February 20, 1820. She emigtated with her parents, a sister and three brothers to Missouri in 1842. She came west with her parents to Oregon. Two of her brothers also came with them. Moved to the Cowlitz in the spring of 1854, married Samuel Layton in the same year. He died in 1882, she surviving him 23 years, 7 months and 16 days. Mrs. Layton had made her home for several years with her eldest son, A. J. Flesher, passing away from an attack of bronchitis, May 11, 1905. Deceased leaves two sons and one daughter to mourn her loss, A. J. Flesher, John Layton and Mrs. Mary Champ.
