"It will be remembered that in his account of the first furrow plowed in Vigo county, he mentioned Martin Adams as being with him. At an old settlers' meeting in Terre Haute, in 1875, this man, among others, was present, and Martin Adams said: 'I was born in Mercer county, Ky., near McAfee's station. I came with my father in 1809 to the place I now live in, in Clark county. On the way we stopped at Curry's prairie; there we met Joseph Liston, Drake and others deliberating whether they would come to Fort Harrison prairie. They were in fear of hostile Indians. We were receiving dispatches [by hand] daily from Gen. Harrison as to his treaty that was unfavorable to peace. Joseph Liston said if any one would join he would go. The two Adamses, Drake, my father and myself joined him, and we came with three wagons. This was in April. That spring I saw Joseph Liston plow the first furrow in the beautiful prairie.'"

Frederick A. Olds was born in Kentucky, a farmer, and moved to Illinois and from there to Iowa. He came to Pleasant Grove in the winter of 1854 and kept a store. The next spring he came to Rochester. He erected a large store building and other houses and contributed largely to the growth of the town. He was the second mayor of the city. He died in 1864 at the age of fifty-four as the result of a fall from the roof of a barn on his farm near Byron.
Thomas L. Fishback was born in Kentucky in 1832. His family moved to Illinois in his youth. He spent two years mining in California and came to Rochester in 1857 and entered the mill of Judge Olds, his father-in-law. After the death of Judge Olds he was a partner with Frederick T. Olds in the ownership of the mill. He was an alderman for two years and was a member of the board of education from 1881 to 1887 and from 1897 to 1905. He retired from business in 1882 and died in January, 1908. He had a fine business reputation.

William E. McAfee. -- Though a representative member of the bar of his native state, this well known and highly honored citizen of Lincoln county is now giving his attention almost exclusively to the management of his farm of six hundred acres, a place devoted to diversified agriculture and to the raising of high grade live stock, especially horses. He is a son of one of the old and honored families of Kentucky, with whose history the name has been prominently identified for many years. Mr. McAfee was born in Mercer county, on the old family homestead on the banks of Salt River, and the date of his nativity was December 2, 1849. There likewise was born his father, James C., in August, 1817. The father was there engaged in farming for several years and in 1861 he moved to Danville in order to afford better educational advantages to his only son, the subject of this review. In that city he died in May, 1877, at the age of sixty years. His wife, whose maiden name was Sarah Edelan (Edelen), was a native of Garrard county, Kentucky, and she was a child at the time of her parents' removal to Lebanon, Marion county, where she was reared to maturity and where her marriage was solemnized. After the death of her husband she made her home with her only son, William E., and she died while absent on a visit to Lebanon, in April, 1899, at the age of seventy-two years.
William McAfee received preliminary educational training of excellent order and finally entered Center College in Danville, in which institution he completed the prescribed course and was graduated in 1868, with the highest honors of his class. He received at this time the degree of Bachelor of Arts and he forthwith entered the law department of the University of Virginia,at Charlottesville, where he completed the two year course in one year, thus securing his degree of Bachelor of Laws by his graduation as a member of the class of 1869. Before he had attained to his legal majority he was licensed to practice law by a special act of the legislature of Kentucky. In 1871 he located in the city of Louisville, where he remained in the law office of Major D. W. Saunders about eighteen months, at the expiration of which he opened his own office. He succeeded in building up a large and representative practice and continued in the work of his profession in Louisville until 1888, having in the meanwhile gained precedence as one of the strong ad versatile members of the bar of the state metropolis. In 1886 he was a candidate for judge of the court of common pleas but was defeated by Judge Emmet Fields, one of the distinguished lawyers and jurists of the state. In 1888 Mr. McAfee removed to Lincoln county and settled on the old Givens' homestead, which had been the home of his wife before their marriage. this fine farm, comprised of more than six hundred acres, he has since successfully operated and he finds much of pleasure and profit in the generous rural surroundings and conditions that compass him. For a number of years past he gave special attention to the breeding and training of fine standard-bred horses and he is still an extensive and successful breeder of high grade horses. He takes an active and zealous interest in all that tends to advance the industrial and social welfare of the community and is one of the honored and influential citizens of Lincoln county, where his circle of friends is coincident with that of his acquaintances.
In politics Mr. McAfee has always been aligned as a staunch advocate of the principles and policies of the Democratic party and in his earlier days he did effective work in behalf of the party cause, to which he contributed liberally of his time, influence and funds In the Masonic fraternity he has attained the chivalric degrees and while a resident of Louisville he served two terms as master of Abraham Lodge. No. 8, Free & Accepted Masons. His maximum affiliation in the time-honored fraternity is with Louisville Commandery, Knights Templars, at Louisville. He was reared in the faith of the Presbyterian church and his religious views are in harmony with its tenets, though he is not formally identified with any religious body. His wife is a zealous member of the Christian church at Danvillel.
On the 3d of December, 1878, in the house which now constitutes their home, was solemnized the marriage of Mr. McAfee to Miss Alice Givens, daughter of the late Dr. George W. Givens, a member of one of the oldest and most honored families of Lincoln county and one that has been identified with the history of Kentucky from the early pioneer days. Mrs. McAfee was born and reared on the old homestead, which is still her place of abode, and she has long been prominent in connection with the best social activities of the community, where she is held in affectionate regard by an exceptionally large circle of devoted friends. Mr. and Mrs. McAfee have six children, whose names and respective ages are here noted, the record being indicated for the year 1910: Georgia, twenty-six years; Robert, twenty-four; William E, Jr., twenty-one; James C., nineteen; Givens, seventeen; and Ernest M., fifteen.

W. B. Edelen, section 16, was born in 1827, in Marion County, Kentucky, and is the son of Leonard and Susan (Bruce) Elelen; the former of Washington and the latter of Lincoln County, Kentucky. Leonard Edelen was among the leading men of Washinton County, and for many years was occupied in merchandising. they were married, lived and died in Marion County, Kentucky. The subject of this sketch was raisd and educated in his native county, being brought up in the merchantile channel from boyhood, consequently it came quite natural for him to enter life as a merchant. In 1841 he made his first venture and opened a general stock at Harrodsville, Kentucky, doing a good business there. In 1857 he sold out and turned his attention for the next four years to farming. At the breaking out of the late war in 1861 he again opened a store at Danville, Kentucky, and at one time was a large operator in whisky and cotton but through the dishonesty of his partner, lost heavily. In 1867 he moved to Jessamine County, Kentuck, and engaged in farming and the live stock business till moving to Cass County, MO, in 1872. Mr. Edelen was united in marriage in 1852 to Miss Eveline B. McAfee, a native of Mercer County, Kewntucky, and the youngest daughter of General Robert and Mary (Crocket) McAfee. Her father was lieutenant governor under governor DeSha, and was in the senate and legislature for many terms. He was also minister to South America for four years under President Van Buren. Mr. and Mrs. Edelen have a family of six children living; Laura H. (wife of C. H. Moore), James M. (now in California), Henry D. , Lou Belle, Willie H. and Thomas Brown. They have lost two who died in infancy. They are both members of the Old School Presbyterian Church. Mr. Edelen, now owns 100 acres of well improved land two and a half miles southwest of Belton. All this has ben obtained since coming her as he left Kentucky without much means. Two acres of land are devoted to fruit.</p>

"Alexander Buchanan for forty-five years has been Justice of the Peace in Washington Township, Parke County. Politically he was an old-line Whig until the organization of the Republican Party, of which he was one of the charter members. At the time of his father's death, which occurred on March 29, 1839, our subject came into possession of the old homestead, which consisted of about three hundred and twenty acres and to this he, with his son Joseph, has added two hundred and eighty acres. As a farmer his career has been very successful and he has laid up sufficient to surround his declining years with every comfort. He was born in the year 1813, in Mercer County, Kentucky, and is the son of James and Margaret (McCampbell) Buchanan.
The father was a son of George and Margaret (McAfee) Buchanan, the former of whom was born in Virginia. The Buchanan and McAfee families both had representatives in the Revolutionary War. George Buchanan was a Whig in politics and was engaged in battle with the Indians several times. He was reared under the old rooftree, but having a stepmother he started out to make his own living when quite young. He had but one own brother, David, who died when young, but had two half-brothers, William and John. IN his native State he married the daughter of James McAfee, and shortly after went to Kentucky, where he entered Government land in Mercer County. His death occurred about the year 1812, in the faith of the Presbyterian Church, which he helped to establish in Mercer County. He reared a family of ten children, of whom James was the oldest, the others being John, Alexander, George, Polly (Mrs. William Provine), Margaret (Mrs. Thomas Carr), Jane (Mrs. James McCampbell), Ann (wife of Joseph Woods), Nancy (Mrs. Thomas Gilkerson), and Dorcas, wife of Joseph Woods, who is a cousin of Mrs. Ann Woods' husband.
Our subject's father was born in Virginia and went to Kentucky when about eighteen years of age, living with his uncle McAfee. He purchased land in Mercer County and followed farming during his lifetime, though he was in the milling business for a short time with his brother. He was first married in Kentucky, when Rebecca Armstrong became his wife. They had four children: Margaret, wife of Mathew Taylor; John, George and Robert, all deceased. After the death of this wife Mr. Buchanan married the lady who became our subject's mother. Of her three children, two died in infancy, and our subject is the only survivor. The father left Kentucky, and on his arrival in Parke County, entered land of the Government, this being in 1820. The following year, in October, he brought his family in wagons to the place that was his home until his death, March 29, 1838. He was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, as was his family for generations past. He was a man of intelligence, had a good education for those days of limited advantages, and was a Whig in politics.
The gentleman of whom this is a brief biography lived with his parents until their death. He was married, in 1839, to Miss Harriet, daughter of Benjamin and Margaret (Youel) Allen, who were natives of the Old Dominion, while Mrs. Buchanan came for the Blue Grass region. The Allen family were early settlers of this county, to which they came about the year 1831, settling in this vicinity. Four children came to bless the hearthstone of our subject: Joseph C.; Elizabeth J., wife of John McMutry; William Y., who wedded Mary Mitchell; and one who died in infancy. Joseph, the eldest son, who in 1865 was chosen as County Surveyor by the Republicans and held this important position for two years, was married, in 1874, to Miss Eliza E. McCampbell. She was the daughter of John M. and Nancy A. McCampbell, natives of Kentucky and Parke County, Indiana, respectively, while Mrs. Buchanan was born in this county. They have had three children. One died in early childhood and the others are William W. and James C. Buchanan. Elizabeth lives within a few miles of her father's home and has a little son and daughter: Walter D. and Mary E. McMutry. William, the youngest of the family, lives on a portion of the old homestead, which he farms, and his one child, Freddie A. Buchanan. The sons, like their father, are stalwart Republicans and are influential citizens of the community in which their home is made. "

"JOHN C. GILKESON is a well-known citizen of Raccoon Township, Parke County. He was born in Mercer County, Ky., May 27, 1809, about two and a half miles from Harrisburg [sic-should be Harrodsburg]. His father, Thomas Gilkeson, was born in Pennsylvania January 26, 1779, and was a son of Thomas Gilkeson, who was probably born in the same State. The grandfather of our subject in his early life went from Pennsylvania to Virginia, and fiom there to Mercer Country, Ky., where Thomas, Jr., was married about the year 1807 to Nancy Buchanan. This lady was a native of Pennsylvania, born August 27, 1780, to George and Margaret (Macafee) Buchanan, both of whom were reared in the Presbyterian faith.
The subject of this biography is the eldest in a family of seven children, three sous and four daughters: Ann, who married Samuel W. Adams and settled in Adams Township, this county, January 21, 1853; Mary K., who was the wife of Stephen Sale, and died in Florida Township December 4, 1863; George N., who married Susan McCain, a resident of Cass County, Mo.; Isabella M., who is a maiden lady seventy-four years old, and lives with her brother, our subject; Thomas B., who died December 9, 1851; and Nancy, wife of John A. Green, of Pennington County, S. Dak. In December, 1821, the father of our subject came to the banks of the Little Raccoon, in the northernpart of Raccoon Township, and located on the farm where Squire Gilkeson now lives. He was a man of more than ordinary education and business qualification, and soon erected a sawmill on the Little Raccoon River, near his own cabin. This he continued to operate the remainder of his life in connection with his farm work. He was for a number of years a Justice of the Peace in this township, and died August 7, 1847. The mother of our subject died September 29, 1838.
The gentleman of whom we write had but limited advantages for getting an education, in fact all the school learning he ever received was before his parents came to Parke County, and that when he was eleven years of age. But he was blessed with a retentive memory and a taste for reading good literature, and is a natural-born genius. He could build a house, operate a mill, shoe a horse, and, in fact, there were few things with which he came in contact that he did not master.
Mr. Gilkeson is a man of sound judgment, and for miles around the settlers came to him forlegal avice. In 1844 he was elected to the responsible position of Justice of the Peace in his township and, with the exception of two years in the '40s, he has held the office continually. It is a fact worthy of note that in all these 3 years he has tried hundreds of cases in which were concerned numerous extensive interests and knotty questions, but when he made a decision it was as good as final, for never in a single case has a higher court reversed his decision. He is now eighty-four years old and his intellect is as bright and his decisions as clear and forcible as they were half a century ago, and had not this gentleman been afflicted with an impediment in his speech, he might, and no doubt would, have gained a national reputation instead of a local one.
In 1842 Mr. Gilkeson was married to Mary, daughter of William Rea, who came to Parke County in 1820. This amiable lady passed away August 5, 1875. In politics our subject is a stanch Republican, and formerly was quite active in local politics. At one time he joined the Know-Nothings, but at the first meeting he told thera they were rightly named, and never met with them again. He has been a member of the Presbyterian Church for sixty-three years, and was elected Elder of the congregation, which office he has filled with satisfaction to all. He has lived an upright. Christian life and is well deserving of a representation in this volume. Our subject says from 1839 to 1846 there were quite a number of flatboats run on the Raccoon. They were 16x120 feet in dimensions, and he has seen as many as twelve in one winter.

714. Wally Haley - El Paso Historical Society, "Magoffin Historic District", viewed August 25, 1999.
"One of El Paso's oldest and most distinctive neighborhoods got its start in 1849, when James Wiley Magoffin settled on the banks of the Rio Grande and established a trading post to the east of the present downtown El Paso area. The area was soon known as Magoffinville after the veteran Chihuahua trader who made a fortune in mining, and who built a large adobe home, store and warehouse around an open square. The property was watered by an acequia running through the square. Magoffin's home of hacienda proportions was the centerpiece for lavish parties thrown to honor army and government officials. In 1854, a military post was established in Magoffinville named Fort Bliss. Both Magoffinville and Fort Bliss suffered from the fortunes of war and the ever wandering and flooding Rio Grande as time progressed.
When Magoffin arrived in the area, there were only a few other settlements of note, namely Hugh Stephenson's Concordia ranch, Juan Ponce de Leon's ranch was later owned by Benjamin Franklin Coons, and Simeon Hart's Mill. El Paso was first known as Franklin after Ben Franklin Coons and later as Magoffinville. An 1884 bird's eye view rendering of El Paso County shows the Magoffin Homestead located in an orchard. Streets are laid out and named but only a dozen other houses are adjacent to the homestead area. In 1917, General Anson Mills lived in the district at 717 Magoffin. Mills first surveyed and laid out the streets for the downtown area. Streets were named after many pioneers: Ochoa for Juan de Dios Ochoa, brother of Inocente Ochoa, wealthy Juarez merchants; Vincent St. Vrain was an Alderman; Octavia was Mrs. Magoffin; and Overland was named for the Stage Coach route. Because the Magoffinville area was the first neighborhood to be developed after the arrival of the railroads in 1880–1890, its houses reflect the styles and materials imported from the middle west and east coast. High Victorian was the prevalent style. Two examples of the Queen Anne design can be found at 912 and 1129 Magoffin (below). A rare example of Gothic Revival is the tiny German Lutheran Church at 1109 E. San Antonio. The Beall House at 817 Olive was constructed in 1882 and is unique for its all–redwood siding construction.
When the fashionable Sunset Heights neighborhood began to develop in 1906, Magoffinville suffered in several ways. The appeal of the high, rounded knolls for building sites overlooking the Rio Grande and the grand architectural styles and landscaping of Sunset Heights drew many from Magoffinville. In 1914 Kern Place became equally attractive and the wealthy and influential began moving out to these new developments. A lack of restrictive zoning policies in the Magoffin neighborhood resulted in a mixture of incompatible uses; residential, commercial and industrial. This mixture of uses only served to hasten deterioration in the area. The Magoffin Home, built in 1875, is the most significant building in the District and one of the most historical in the city. It displays a regional architectural style developed in the Southwest between 1865 and 1880. A combination of native building techniques and materials and of popular eastern U.S. Building motifs, the territorial style was one of the first manifestations of the "Americanizing" of the southwest. The Magoffin Home, a rare Texas example of this style, is built of sun dried adobe with Greek Revival details apparent in its pedimented and pilastered doors and windows. The home originally had six rooms flanking a large central hall, another feature of the Territorial style , and exterior adobe mud plaster. Some time before 1887, the east ell was added and the home was covered with a lime plaster scored to resemble masonry. The three south rooms, probably dating to the 1870's, later were attached to the main house, forming a patio in the center. Fashionable Victorian–era wallpaper covered the walls and ceilings.
The Magoffin Home, purchased jointly in 1976 by the State of Texas and City of El Paso, contains many of the family furnishings including the 13–foot–high canopied bed, full–length, pier glass mirrored wardrobe, marble–topped chest and washstand in Mrs. Joseph Magoffin's bedroom. Several ornate chairs and matching settee show Mexican designs and possibly were manufactured locally. Today, the home is the centerpiece of much activity, offering a gift shop, tours and special events. "

"Beriah Magoffin His father, Beriah Magoffin, was a native of the County of Down, Ireland; was a merchant at Harrodsburg, KY, and President of the Commonwealth Bank. His mother was the daughter of Samuel McAfee. Mr. Magoffin was born April 18, 1815, at Harrodsburg, where he received his early education. He graduated at Centre College, 1834; studied law with his brother-in-law, Charles M. Cunningham, and at Transylvania University. He entered upon the practice of his profession at Jackson, MS, in 1838, in partnership with Judge Harney. While in that State he was elected Reading Clerk to the Senate. Returned to Kentucky in 1840 and entered in law practice with his brother-in-law. Was appointed Police Judge by Governor Letcher, although of a different political party. In 1850 was a member of the Kentucky Senate. In 1855 was defeated by the Know-Nothings when running for the office of Lieutenant-Governor. Elected Governor in 1859 as a Democrat over the Hon. Joshua F. Bell."
729. Harrison, Lowell H. "Magoffin, Beriah" American National Biography Online, Feb. 2000.
Magoffin, Beriah (18 Apr. 1815-28 Feb. 1885), governor of Kentucky, was born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, the son of Beriah Magoffin and Jane McAfee, farmers. After graduating from Centre College in 1835, Magoffin completed the law program at Transylvania College in 1838. He began to practice law in Jackson, Mississippi, but became ill and returned to Kentucky, where he opened a successful practice in Harrodsburg. On 21 April 1840 he married Anna Nelson Shelby; ten of their children survived infancy. Although a strong Democrat, Magoffin was appointed as Harrodsburg police judge in 1840 by a Whig governor. He was a delegate to several Democratic National Conventions and was elected to the state senate in 1850. After declining a nomination for Congress in 1851, he ran for lieutenant governor in 1855 but lost to a Know Nothing candidate. A presidential elector in 1856, he was elected governor in 1859, 76,187 to 67,283, over his Whig opponent, Joshua Bell.
Magoffin's administration was dominated by the secession crisis and the Civil War. Prosouthern in his sentiments, he accepted slavery and the right of a state to secede, but he believed that if the slave states presented collective demands the North would have to accept them. In a circular letter of 9 December 1860 to the slave state governors, he suggested calling a conference that would insist on strict enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act, a division of the territories between slave and free at the thirty-seventh parallel, and a constitutional provision that would allow the South to protect its interests, perhaps by requiring a two-thirds Senate majority to pass legislation pertaining to slavery. If this proposal failed, Magoffin believed that Kentucky would join the other slave states in leaving the Union.
In response to a secessionist appeal from the Alabama governor, Magoffin replied on 28 December 1860 that "the mode and manner of defense and redress should be determined in a full and free conference of all the Southern States, and that their mutual safety requires full co-operation in carrying out the measures there agreed upon." This cooperative movement was to be completed before Abraham Lincoln's inauguration in March 1861.
In a special legislative session that he called for 17 January 1861, Magoffin admitted that he had not been able to arrange a conference of the slave states. While he recommended Kentucky's participation in a border states convention scheduled for Baltimore in February and endorsed the compromise proposals of John J. Crittenden, the governor asked for a state convention to determine Kentucky's course of action. Such a sovereignty convention was required for secession, and Unionists, by refusing to convene it, blocked any attempt by Magoffin to take Kentucky out of the Union. When the war started at Fort Sumter, Magoffin rejected Lincoln's call for troops, and in his 7 May message to a special legislative session he blamed the Republicans for starting the war. He also refused a request from Confederate president Jefferson Davis (1808?-1889) for troops. The legislators again denied the governor's request for a state convention, and they established a six-man commission, on which Magoffin served, to determine policy for the state. With opinion sharply divided, the immediate solution was to declare neutrality, which Magoffin proclaimed on 20 May 1861. No other state tried such a policy, and it was actually no more legal than was secession. Both Union and Confederate recruiters violated the state's neutrality, and a pro-Union Home Guard was formed to counter the State Guard that was largely pro-Confederate.
Legislative elections on 5 August gave Unionists a better than two-thirds majority in both houses, and thereafter the governor's vetoes of measures that he believed favored the Union were swiftly overridden. "My functions are purely executive," he declared, "and I am bound by my oath of office to carry out the lawful will of the people, whether the policy they prefer accords with my own views or not." Magoffin was careful to execute laws of which he disapproved after they had been passed over his veto, but the Unionists did not trust him. After neutrality ended in September 1861, when Confederate forces entered the western part of the state, he was pressured to resign. Even his condemnation of the Confederate government of Kentucky that was organized at Russellville in November and admitted into the Confederate States of America on 10 December 1861 did not reassure his opponents. That government did not represent the wishes of a majority of the people of the state, and he would not recognize it. Shorn of most of his powers, Magoffin complained in July 1862, "I am without a soldier or a dollar to protect the lives, property, and liberties of the people." He complained that military officers, such as Brigadier General Jeremiah T. Boyle, were violating the civil rights of Kentuckians by making arbitrary arrests of suspected Confederate sympathizers, interfering with elections, and curbing freedom of speech and press.
His position became increasingly untenable, and on 16 August 1862 Magoffin indicated a willingness to resign if, despite being a Unionist, his successor was a "conservative, just man." The office of lieutenant governor was vacant, and the Speaker of the senate, who was next in line of succession, was more radical in his views than the governor would accept. In an arranged sequence of events, the Speaker resigned, and James F. Robinson, who had Magoffin's approval, was elected Speaker. Magoffin resigned on 18 August 1862, Robinson became governor, and the previous Speaker of the senate was reelected to that position.
Magoffin retired quietly to his Mercer County farm and his lucrative legal practice, and he participated little in events during the rest of the war. In 1867 he was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives, where he advocated acceptance of the results of the war, much to the dismay of many fellow Democrats. He favored extension of civil rights to blacks and ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the federal constitution, which the legislature had rejected. He did not seek reelection. Magoffin made shrewd land investments in the Chicago area, and when he died on his beloved farm he was one of Kentucky's wealthiest citizens. By the time of his death, much of the wartime animosity had dissipated, and Magoffin was recognized as a man of principle who had tried to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the governorship, even when he disagreed with the prevailing opinion in the state.

Dear Jenny,
I have a specific and official acknowledgement of Margaret's death as 10 DEC
1861.

Pages 276 and 277
-------------------------
She probably died in the early morning hours of the 11th, but it
unfortunately still occurred prematurely in 1861.
The Bible record stating 1862 for the birth of her last child, Ebenetta,
will have to be reviewed. An asterisk may be an appropriate option going
forward. Just a suggestion as I know the McAfee's are the priority.
Thanks for listening to my thoughts, Jenny, as I am thankful and fortunate
for all the research you have so willingly shared.
Best Regards,
James

William J. Curtner, proprietor of the well equipped drug store at Carlisle, was born January 14, 1854, in Carlisle, Indiana, son of James A. and Symira (Ledgerwood) Curtner. The father was born in Kentucky and came to Carlisle, Indiana, when a young man, remaining there until his death, which occurred January 31, 1864. He served in the army during the Mexican war. He was of Scotch and German descent. By trade he was a harness and saddle maker, and conducted his business on the spot where his son's drug store now stands. He is said to have been an exceptional workman at his trade, and his workmanship was known far and near for both its beauty and quality. He voted the Republican ticket and was a charter member of Carlisle Lodge, No. 50, of the Odd Fellows order, at Carlisle. Both he and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal church.
The mother of William J. was born one mile southwest of Carlisle, on the old Ledgerwood homestead, which was the first place settled upon anywhere north of Yincennes. The great-grandfather, James Ledgerwood, was a native of South Carolina and located in Kentucky when a young man and came to Indiana in the spring of 1793, and in the fall of that year returned to Kentucky, intending to move his family the following year, but on the banks of the Ohio river he was captured by the Indians, who took him to a point near Detroit, Michigan, and there held him a prisoner for seven years. He then returned to Kentucky and got his family, coming to Carlisle in 1803. Here he built him a cabin of logs, a mile southwest of the town. He was granted some land west of Carlisle by the government on which to build a mill, which he operated until his death. This grist-mill was willed to his son William, who operated the same until his death, giving it to three of his sons, Thomas, Joseph and William, Jr. William and Joseph died soon after their father's death, when the property fell to Thomas, who operated it until his death, when the old pioneer landmark was sold to Benjamin Watson, and he in turn sold to a Mr. Abbey, who moved it to near Dugger, where it now stands, although abandoned for milling purposes. A wonderful story of early days could be told had this old mill but the power of speech. James Ledgerwood and wife reared a family of five children and one of their sons, Samuel, united with the Christian church of Sullivan county at about the date of its organization.
Mr. Curtner's grandfather, William Ledgerwood, was born in Kentucky, coming with the family to Sullivan county when a mere lad. Here he grew to man's estate and married and reared a family of twelve children. He married Catherine Jenkins, born at Chester District, South Carolina, November, 1792. She moved to Sullivan county, Indiana, when yet a girl. She started with her father and mother about 1804, and after being on the journey about two weeks, her father, Thomas Jenkins, died. The children of this family were: Sarah, Eliza, Catherine, William, Thaddius, Martha, John and Richard. The last named was killed by the Mexicans while in the army. The great-grandmother of William J. Curtner had a brother named William Gill, who came to Sullivan county before she arrived. Gill township was named in honor of him, as was "Gill Prairie." Mr. Curtner's grandmother, Catherine Jenkins, and her sisters and brothers located four miles southwest of Carlisle. The mother joined the Shakers and took her daughters with her. Subsequently, William Ledgerwood married Catherine and took her from the Shaker society, which community bore an interesting part in the early day history of this section of Indiana. Grandmother Jenkins and her daughters, Sarah and Eliza, were among the division of the Shakers who went to Kentucky, locating at Shakerstown, which place is still in existence. There Grandmother Jenkins died before the Civil war and Sarah became head eldress of the Shakers at Shakerstown, holding the position until incapacitated by old age, dying when about ninety-four years.
William Ledgerwood and wife reared twelve children—eight sons and four daughters; only one of the sons. Wesley Ledgerwood, bore children. He died in Iowa, leaving a large family. The daughters all married and bore children: Martha married John Curry; Elizabeth married Col. W. D. Blackburn, who was killed in Louisiana during the Civil war; Nancy married W. G. Culberson; Symira married James A. Curtner and they were the parents of five children, as follows: two died in infancy; John M., residing at Wabash, Indiana, was born June 20, 1851; he is a banker; William J., of this notice; Flora, born August 11, 1857, died about 1880; she married Dr. R. L. Jenkins, now deceased, and their child was Amy, who now resides in California.
William J. Curtner was reared and educated at Carlisle and attended business college at the old Garvin & Heinley College in Terre Haute, Indiana. When nineteen years of age he entered the drug business, at first clerking in Carlisle, and later purchased an interest in the business, and has been thus engaged ever since. The business is now operated under the firm name of W. J. Curtner & Sons. They carry a full line of pure drugs, paints and wall paper. Mr. Curtner owns a part of the old Ledgerwood homestead—eighty-three acres—of which the deed has never been changed from the family. He also is interested in the Building and Loan Association, of which he is president. Politically, he is a Republican and in fraternal societies he is a worthy member of both the Masonic and Odd Fellows orders at Carlisle.
He was united in marriage, September 14, 1876, to Emma A. Griffin, born in Sullivan county, January 6, 1859, a daughter of James L. Griffin, ex-county recorder, and a minister in the Christian church. The children born of this union are: James F., born July 6, 1878, married Ada M. Shepherd, born in Sullivan county; they have one son—Wrilliam Ledgerwood; Ada M., born December 22, 1880, married William B. Akin, former editor of the Times, at Sullivan, but now of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and they have one son; Edgar W., born April 2, 1886, unmarried and in business with his father; Flo, born January 4, 1892, unmarried and at home, and will be graduated from the high school in 1909. The eldest child of the family died in infancy. Mr. Curtner is a member of the Methodist church and his wife of the Christian church.

John B. Hawkins.—An intelligent and thriving agriculturist of Sullivan county, John B. Hawkins owns and occupies a valuable farming property in Cass township and is there numbered among the valued and trustworthy citizens of the place, fulfilling his duties and obligations as such with fidelity. A son of Tarlton Hawkins, he was born February 22, 1852, in Hamilton township, Sullivan county. Abraham Hawkins, the grandfather of John B., was of Scottish birth. Emigrating to this country, he located first in Alabama, and subsequently, not so very long after his marriage with Sarah Dowall, he came across the country to Indiana, settling in Lawrence county in pioneer times. He bought extensive tracts of land, and for many years carried on general farming and stock- raising on a large scale, living there until his death.
Born in Lawrence county, Indiana, Tarlton Hawkins was reared to agricultural pursuits, and later became a farmer from choice. Locating in Sullivan county in 1845, he bought a tract of land lying about five miles northeast of Sullivan, and at once took possession of the log house that stood in a clearing that had previously been made. He made good improvements on the land and resided there a number of years. Moving then to Sullivan, he built up a substantial business as a dealer in grain and agricultural implements, remaining there for some time. When ready to give up active business, he returned to the farm, and there lived retired until his death, November 15, 1895. His wife, whose maiden name was Mary M. Bailey, was born in Lawrence county, Indiana, and died in Sullivan county in 1897. Her father, Elder John Bailey, was born in Kentucky, but came to Indiana when young and was a pioneer preacher of the Christian church in Lawrence county. About 1845 he settled in Sullivan county, taking up land about four miles north of Sullivan, and in addition to farming continued his ministerial labors, preaching at Sullivan, Micldletown, Palmer's Prairie Church, and in other places. Both he and his wife, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Henry, spent their last days on the home farm. Tarlton Hawkins and his wife reared ten children, namely: George R., Sarah E., Clementine, John B.., Isabelle, Achsah, Elorence, Mary, Ward and Mae.
John B. Hawkins was brought up on the home farm, and under the wise instruction of his father early became familiar with the various branches of agriculture, remaining beneath the parental roof until attaining his majority. Going to Texas in 1873, he spent a year in Grayson county, but not liking the place, returned to Indiana and resumed work on his father's farm. Coming to Cass township in 1888, Mr. Hawkins bought the farm on which he now resides, and has since been busily employed in its improvement. These are of an excellent character, the frame buildings which he has erected being substantial and conveniently arranged, the orchard containing a variety of fruit trees, and the land being in a fine state of cultivation. Here he is carrying on general farming and stock-raising with unquestioned success.
On December 31, 1871, Mr. Hawkins married Sarah A. Brodie. who was born February 25, 1856, in Cass township, a daughter of William Allen Brodie. Her grandfather, Samuel Brodie, born November 20, 1790, was a pioneer of Sullivan county. He located first on Shaker Prairie, but afterwards entered government land in sections six and thirty-one of Cass township, and a portion of his original purchase is now owned by his grandchildren. Improving a good homestead, he resided on it until his death, January 12, 1852. He married Ann Curry, who was born December 24, 1781, and died July 12, 1864. A native of Sullivan county, Indiana, William Allen Brodie was born September 30, 1811, in Hacldon township, and was there reared to a farmer's life. Starting out for himself, he settled on a tract of timbered land in section six, Cass township, and lived first in a log cabin. Successful in his operations, he cleared much land, erected a good set of frame buildings, and from time to time added by purchase to his real estate, at the time of his death, September 29, 1892, being the owner of more than three hundred acres. He married Mary J. Maxwell, who was born on Curry's Prairie October 4, 1827. Her father, Levi Maxwell, was born near Richmond, Indiana, September 23, 1809, and was one of the early settlers of Sullivan county. Buying land, he improved a homestead on which he spent the remainder of his life, passing away June 11, 1897. He married Nancy Carruthers, who was born March 24, 1805, and died February 12, 1834. The wife of William Allen Brodie survived him, dying December 14, 1895. Of the children born of their union, seven grew to years of maturity, namely: Sarah A., Abram McClellan, Kate Emma, Lydia Elizabeth, Mary Ellen, Viola Frances and William Allen. Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins reared four children, namely: William T., Roy A., Frank B. and Harry. William T. married Sophia Williams, and they have one child, Mildred. Roy A., who was accidentally killed at the age of twenty-six years, married Mattie Semmers, and at his death left two children, Elmer and Edna. Frank B. married Eva Keene, and they are the parents of four children, Zella, Ray, Noah and Clara. Harry married Mamie Bledsoe, and they have two children, Elzie and Desire. Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins are held in high esteem throughout the community in which thev reside, and are consistent members of the Christian church.

"OBITUARY: Wm. A. Brodie was born on Shaker Prairie, Knox County, Ind., Sept. 30, 1811, and died Sept. 29, 1892, aged 81 years lacking one day, nad was buried on his birthday. He married his first wife, Sarah A. Wagoner, Jan. 25, 1849, unto whom was born one child. On the 29th of Aug., 1851, death claimed her as his victim and the child, Rebecca, died Jan. 1, 1851. He again married, March 22, 1855, to Mary J. Maxwell, unto whom was born seven children, five girls and two boys, all of whom still live to mourn the loss of a noble father. The aged wife who survives him feels the loss most keenly, having walked by his side and shared his sorrows and pleasures, and helped to carry the burden of caring for a young family in a new country, as Mr. Brodie was one of the old settlers of the county. He lived in the same community in which he died, and was regarded by his neighbors as an honest and upright citizen, and no one was held in higher esteem for truth and justice than Uncle Allen (as he was called). He was a great sufferer for four years, but with pateince he waited for the death angel to lead him across the death stream to his final reward. The funeral took place from the family residence and was attended by a large congregation of sympathizing friends. Services were conducted by Rev. Thos. Burton, of Sullivan."

Was born in Knox county, Indiana, August 30, 1815, where he grew to man's estate and resided on a farm, at the same time receiving the education afforded by the schools of that period. On November 13, 1834, he espoused in matrimony, Sarah Bruce, who died in Lane county, April 26, 1858. With his good lady Mr. McClure crossed the plains with ox-teams by way of Laramie, Fort Hall, etc., and at Malheur, diverting from the old road they -- four families, among whom were the brother of our subject James F. McClure, and the Bonds, Allen and William, both of this county -- essayed a new route over the Cascade mountains. Now hardships followed each other in rapid succession; such dangers that are incredible to those who live at home in luxury and ease. To such a straight were our party brought that they were compelled to sacrifice their cows in order to obtain food. Each recurring day saw their stock of groceries decrease -- the last animal was eaten without a pinch of salt, while the other necessaries but too surely faded away. At long last the happy day on which they crossed the summit of the Cascades came. They saw the shining Willamette coursing placidly through the lovely valley to which it gives its name; they followed its unerring course, ultimately found themselves on the beautiful prairie that has Eugene City for its center and Mr. McClure settled about eight miles west from that town. Here he took up a donation claim, made many improvements thereon and there dwelt until 1862. In the meantime, on October 16, 1859, he married Mrs. Sarah Scott Benson, and with her, in 1862, took up his residence on her property situated two miles and a half north from Eugene City, where he has since dwelt, still retaining, however, his own original claim. Mr. McClure's family consists of three children -- two girls and one boy. Mrs. McClure too, has had her share of pioneer experiences. The year 1849 found her at Salt Lake City, in one of those innumerable companies of argonauts bound to California in search of the golden fleece. That to which she belonged was under the captaincy of Jerome B. Geer, who, learning that the grass had been burned along the route, changed his plans and determined to push for Oregon, for which little known country they set out in the spring of 1851. The stay in Salt Lake was not without its excitements, for the Mormons, on hearing that Mr. M. H. Harlow, her brother -in-law, was from La Fayette county, Missouri, they took him prisoner threatening, not only to kill him but to slay all the men of the party, retaining the women and children. Happily they were dissuaded from perpetrating this inhuman crime and the immigrants permitted to proceed on their way. Arriving in Oregon in June, 1851, that year she took up her abode on the property where she now resides, happy in her family relations. Mr. McClure was elected to the legislature in 1862, serving for one term, and giving satisfaction to his constituents who still for him that regard which is the reward of honest integrity and uprightness. An excellent view of the residence of Mr. and Mrs. McClure will be found elsewhere in this work.

910. History of Knox and Daviess Counties, Indiana, Chicago: Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1886, pp. 458-459.
HIRAM H. McCLURE, deceased, a prominent farmer, and native of Knox County, Ind., was born Sept. 6, 1824, and was the youngest of eleven children of Samuel and Jane (Curry) McClure, natives of Kentucky, born June 1, 1784, and August 25,1783, respectively. They were married in 1805, and came to Indiana a few years later. They were among the early pioneers, and lived in a fort to protect themselves from the Indians. The father was in the war of 1812, in the battle of Tippecanoe. He died November 17, 1851, and the mother June 22, 1839. Hiram H. was reared on the home farm, where he lived and died. At the age of twenty-one he married, and began his career as a tiller of the soil. He was quite prosperous and owned about 200 acres of very fine land, well improved with a good brick residence. He was married. May 7, 1845, to Rosella Seaney, born in Illinois, October 28,1828. They became the parents of nine children, all but one now living: Sarah J., born October 29, 1846; Mary E., born October 2,1848, and died April 23, 1863; Samuel B., born June 22, 1850; Albert B., bom November 19,1852; Henrietta P., born June 16,1855; Margaret A., born August 6, 1858; Flora A., born March 16 1861; Edgar M., born August 29, 1867, and Jasper F., born April 14, 1871. Mr. McClure was a zealous member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and his wife and their children were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a very strong Republican, and was trustee several terms. He was very just and honest in his business transactions, and was much respected and esteemed by all who knew him. He was a member of the I. O. O. F., and his death, which occurred November 20, 1876, was a great loss to the community. The mother still resides on the old homestead. Samuel B. McClure is the third child of Hiram McClure, and was born near where he now resides, June 22, 1850. He received a fair business education, and attended the commercial college at Terre Haute, Ind., three months. He made his parents' house his home until about twenty-five years of age, when he married and located on his present farm, where he has followed agricultural pursuits very successfully. He owns seventy-five acres of very fertile land, well improved, with a good two-story frame residence in a pleasant location. He has a hay- cellar, made of pressed hay and cemented, which is very convenient, and the only one in the county. February 21, 1878, he was married to Fannie Shepard, daughter of James M. Shepard, whose sketch appears in this work. One child was born to them January 23, 1880, which died November 3, 1881. Both husband and wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mr. McClure is a member of the I. O. O. F., and has always given his aid and support to the Republican party.

"The 17th of Feb was the 50th anniv. of the marr. ceremony of David and Sophia Galey, but owing to the sickness in the family, the event was not celebrated until Wed March 16 at which time there gathered together at the residence in Brown Twp about 40 persons, consisting of children, grandchildren and gr. grandchildren, nephews, nieces and neighbors. There was only one person present who was at the wedding 50 years ago that was Andrew Snyder who is in his 80th year, being the oldest man in the township. After a bountiful repast from a table groaning under an immense lot of good things of the land and we were gathered around, Uncle David remarked that he would stand it so he could be what was going on. After a few appropriate remarks by Samuel R. Fisher, the old people were presented with a rocking chair for each and invited to a seat after which Uncle David was present with a gold headed cane and Aunt Sophia with a gold thimble and other "presents." They express their heartfelt thanks for the presents and for the respect shown them in their declining years. It was a day well spent and will be remembered by all for many years to come."
