Bacon Rochester Moore.—No man was better known or enjoyed greater esteem and consideration in the community in which he resided than Bacon Rochester Moore, who is still regretted in the inner circle in which he was dearest as a man cut off in the prime of his life and faculties. He was a planter by occupation, had mining and other interests and served in several public capacities. He was born in Harrodsburg on June 13, 1850, and died on the 2oth of August, 1889. His father was Dr. James Harrison Moore, a sketch of whose life is contained elsewhere in this volume. He enjoyed the advantages of a thorough education, pursuing his studies at Centre College at Danville, at the Washington and Lee University of Lexington, Virginia, and read law at Harrodsburg with John Charles Thompson and was admitted to the bar by Captain Phil B. Thompson. Although prepared for the legal profession, he never engaged in its practice, but devoted himself to the operation of his father's plantation and his own, "Baconia," a large plantation in Sharkey county, Mississippi. Mr. Moore was for several years a member of the Levee Board, being identified with its finance committee, and was appointed by Governor Knott to represent Kentucky at the Planters' Convention, which met at Vicksburg, Mississippi.
Mr. Moore's interests were not wholly confined to the south, but included certain mining ventures in Colorado. He was director in the Harrodsburg Fair Association and held the office of sheriff of Mercer county at the time of his death. In addition to his other property Mr. Moore had a small farm of one hundred acres situated one and one-half miles from Harrodsburg, where his home, "Oak- wood." was located. He spent his summers here and his winters in the extreme south, being often accompanied in his winter pilgrimages by his family.
In his political convictions Mr. Moore was of that vast majority living south of the Mason and Dixon line, and gave his allegiance to the Democratic party. He joined the Christian church at Cane Run and was a deacon there for several years. He later became identified with the Christian church at Har- rodsburg, in whose counsels he rilled the same official capacity.
Mr. Moore laid the foundations of a happy home life by his marriage, December 12, 1872, to Nannie Smith Bowman, daughter of Dudley Mitchem and Virginia (Smith) Bowman. The father was a brother of John B. Bowman, regent of Kentucky University, and a nephew of John Bowman, first county lieutenant (virtually governor) of Kentucky. The union of Mr. and Mrs. Moore was celebrated at "Belle- vue," the lovely home of the bride, situated near Burgin, Mercer county. To them were born eight children, seven of whom survive. Bowman Messenger died in infancy; Dudley Bowman is a Mississippi planter; Mary Bacon is the wife of Dr. Roy W. Dunlap of Fort Worth, Texas; James Harrison Moore is a Canadian wheat grower; Virginia is the wife of John S. Davenport, a wholesale grocer of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Daniel Lawson Moore, Jr., pursues the calling of a planter in Mississippi; Bacon Rochester Moore was educated in Transylvania University, was admitted to the bar and is now conducting the home farm; John B. is a wheat grower of Alberta. Canada.
The mother of these children is the only one of the Bowman family now residing in Mercer county. They were once prominent here, and the great-grant father, George Bowman, received a large land grant in Virginia from Kine Georee II.
Bacon Rochester Moore was gathered to his fathers on August 20, 1889, after an illness with typhoid fever, and was buried in Spring Hill cemetery the following day. At the obsequies Dr. J. G. Hunter, of the Presbyterian church, and Rev H. T. Wilson, of the Christian church, officiated. It was a matter of deep and general regret that this gentleman had not been permitted to bring to fuller fruition those many good gifts of mind and heart which were his.

Among the men who have contributed the greater part of their lives toward the upbuilding of the Golden State is George B. Metteer, who was born Sept. 23, 1872, a son of Charles H. and Mary Jane (Donaldson) Metteer, whose sketch is given elsewhere in this history. He first saw the light on the Metteer ranch, one mile east of Live Oak, Sutter County. The ranch was formerly called Antelope Ranch, in the early pioneer days, on account of the thousands of antelopes that roamed the country during the fifties. Hunters and ranch owners placed the antlers of these antelopes on the fence which surrounded the ranch which was then owned by Mr. Boyanton, who passed may years ago; hence the name Antelope Ranch. This ranch is situated on the Feather River, twelve miles north of Yuba City. George Baxter is the third in order of birth of the five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Metteer. Mrs. C.H. Metteer passed away on July 28, 1913, at the age of seventy-one years.
George B. Metteer was reared n his fathers ranch and since 1890 he has worked with his father in its development. Since 1915 he has conducted the orchard and ranch, assuming full reponsibility of the management of the ranch, which is considered one of the most fertile and splendidly developed ranches in this locality. Apporximitely 300 acres in all, it is devoted to the raising of cereals, grains, beans, and live stock. They previously conducted a dairy, but for some time they have devoted their energy and efforts to other lines and since 1899 have set out part of the land to orchard. In 1915 they set out their prune orchard.
In Yuba City, on January 29, 1891, George B. Metteer married Miss Jessie M. Moore, a native of Stockton, and a daughter of William Moore, a pioneer ranch-owner of San Joaquin County, who had crossed the plains to California in 1849, and in this State married Sarah McAfee, who had come from Kentucky. She has resided in Sutter County since 1887, having remained with her sister at Live Oak previously to her marriage. They were blessed with seven children: Roy G., in Sacramento; Charles I., who served over seas during the World War; Ila G., Mrs. A. L. Siler, Live Oak; Muriel J., Mrs. V. Cobeen, of Live Oak; and William M., Emola L., and Eugene D. Mr. and Mrs. Metteer are also the grandparents of Lea Metteer, Patricia Siler, and Wilda Siler. Mr. Metteer is a Republican in national politics. Mrs. Metteer is a member of the Live Oak Woman's Club.

"A woman pedestrian was struck by an automobile and killed Saturday night as she walked along East Main St. in Springfield. She was identified by the coroner as Mrs. Laura McAfee Brockman, about 70, of 407 1/2 N. 25th St. The accident happened shortly after 7 p.m., about 20 feet inside the city limits. Officers said visibility was poor because of rain and darkness. The victim was wearing a black raincoat.Raymond Glenn McMullen, driver of the car, told police that Mrs. Brockman was walking in the lane of traffic. He said he saw her too late to avoid hitting her. Police Chief Harry Howard said no charges would be filed against McMullen. His home is at 143 Tomahawk Ln., Eugene. Howard said Mrs. Brockman was walking toward the city, with her back toward oncoming traffic. He said there were no sidewalks nor street lights at the point of the accident. Mrs. Brockman was dead by the time an ambulance reached the scene. The body was taken to the Bartholomew-Buell Chapel in Springfield."

Prof. Thomas McAfee. The beautifully located little City of Franklinton, Louisiana, has much to recommend it as a place of residence, and not the least to its advantages is the maintenance here of a high school that in organized efficiency and preservation of high educational standards compares favorably with any in the state. It is fortunate in having at its head Prof. Thomas H. McAfee, a capable man of culture and judgment, of travel and experience, college bred but of widened vision, under whose administration this institution has become a strong factor in the educational and cultural life of the community.
Professor McAfee was born near Salvisa, Kentucky, January 9, 1884, and is a son of William T. and Sadie (Armstrong) McAfee, and a grandson of Samuel and Rachel (Whitenack) McAfee. The grandfather, a lifelong resident of Kentucky, was an extensive farmer near Salvisa and a man of standing in Mercer County. William T. McAfee was born on his father's farm near Salvisa, October 5, 1848. He followed farming there until 19Z2, when he moved to Pineora, Georgia, where he is still interested in farm pursuits. In political opinion he has always been a democrat, and from his youth has been a member of the Presbyterian Church. To his marriage with Sadie Armstrong, who was born at Pleasant Hill, Missouri, January 7, 1847, the following children were born: Elizabeth D., the wife of Rev. Thomas W. Mitchell, who has been a missionary of the Presbyterian Church in China for the past twenty-one years; Nellie Bruce, who is the wife of Dr. Silas Evans, president of Ripon College, Wisconsin; James Horace, who is secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association at Birmingham, Alabama; Thomas H.; and Gilbert A., who resides with his parents.
Thomas H. McAfee received early instruction in the public schools of Mercer County, Kentucky, then became a student in the academy at Harrodsburg, from which he was graduated its the class of 1901. A year of travel in California followed, and when he left the Pacific Coast it was to enter Park College, at Parkville, Missouri, where he continued four years and was graduated in the class of 1906, with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. It was not until some years that he turned his attention definitely to the field of work for which he is so well fitted. In the meanwhile he spent one year in the mercantile business at Kansas City, Missouri, served one year as secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association at Leesburg, Virginia, and one year as secretary of the Philadelphia & Reading Railway Young Men's Christian Association at Philadelphia, and then returned to assist his father on the old home farm. He remained there for six years and then accepted the position of assistant principal of the high school at Rayne, Louisiana, and two years later, in 1918, went to Slidell as principal of the Slidell High School, with supervision over eighteen teachers and 560 pupils. In 1924 he went to Franklinton as principal of the high school.
At Breckenridge, Missouri, August 25, 1915, Mr. McAfee married Miss Abrah Cary, daughter of David and Mary Ella (Reed) Cary, the latter of whom still resides at Breckenridge. Mr. Cary, formerly a farmer and stockraiser, was accidentally killed in a railroad accident. Mrs. McAfee, a graduate of Park College in the class of 1908, for eight years was a successful teacher its the public schools of three states, at Oregon, Missouri; Weleetka, Oklahoma: and at Crockett, Texas. Professor and Mrs. McFee have three sons: Thomas David, born June 10, l916; Howard Cary, born January 8, 1922 and Robert William, born June 10, 1923. Professor McAfee is a member of Rathbone Lodge No. 104, Knights of Pythias, and of the Louisiana State Teachers Association. He is a democrat in political preference, and a member of the Presbyterian Church.

I'm a descendant of James Horace McAfee, which has deficient information. I won't provide it all at this point, but suffice it to say that he was married to Henrietta Louise Kingman in 1910 and they had four children: Lucinda Zeldia McAfee (1911-1992), Henrietta Miller McAfee (1913- still living), William Horace McAfee and Martha Armstrong McAfee, all deceased except for Henrietta. The name Henrietta comes from Henrietta Kingman's father's mother who was Henrietta Schermerhorn.

"He was a civil engineer from UK. He went by Litsey or LL Adams. In W.W.I he was in the army engineering corps and according to his wife, Florence Trinler Adams, was in or near the front lines on November 11th at 11:00 when The War to End All Wars concluded.
He served as chief Eng. for the L&N (Louisville & Nashville) Rail Road for many, many years. His grandson, Howard E. Trent III (Buddy), called him "Daddy Choo Choo" because Litsey gave his grandson rides in the engine. Buddy's mother, Martha, says Litsey was somewhat gruff - so Buddy had hid from him. Buddy recalls how his grandmother, Florence Trinler Adams, loudly bawled when they wheeled the casket away.
He's buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville. There is a large granite marker with Adams on it. Litsey, Florence, and Howard Edgar Trent, Jr. (Bud) are there. Mom, David L. Adams, & his wife Norma Jean Jackson Adams will be interred in the remaining plots."

SAMUEL WARREN ALEXANDER. The family represented by this resident of Colusa county comes of southern lineage, successive generations having lived and labored in Virginia, Kentucky and Missouri. The first of the name to settle west of the Mississippi river was his father, Robert, a native of Anderson county, Ky., and a pioneer of 1830 in Caldwell county, Mo., where for a long period he engaged in general farm pursuits. The land which he developed from its primeval condition became an improved and valuable farm, but suffered from the general devastation ensuing from the Civil war, and his own fortunes were somewhat impaired by reverses incident to that memorable conflict. With a view to a more desirable climate and location, in 1874 he came to California and settled at Grand Island, where he conducted an apiary as well as general agricultural pursuits until his death in 1900. By his marriage to Mary Woodruff, who was born in Kentucky and died in California, he had twelve children, and among these Samuel Warren was tenth in order of birth, and was born in Caldwell county, Mo., January 3, 1856. When the family removed to California, he was a young man of eighteen years, fairly well educated, physically strong and robust, and mentally keen and discriminating. The elder children left home one by hone, but he remained as an assistant to his father and it was not until after the latter's demise that he left the old homestead.
Renting a large tract of land near Arbuckle on Sand Creek, Mr. Alexander engaged in the stock business, buying and selling in large quantities. After four years on that ranch in December of 1904 he removed to a tract of eight hundred acres seven miles northwest of Arbuckle, and here he has since engaged in raising wheat and barley. While the property on which he resides is leased he is a land-owner, having purchased in October, 1904, a tract of three hundred and twenty acres seven miles west of Arbuckle on Sand Creek, which he has stocked with range cattle and utilizes to secure needed pasturage. In his farming transactions he displays energy, wise judgement and sound common sense, and whatever degree of prosperity time may bring to him will be richly merited by his arduous labors.
The three children of Mr. Alexander's first marriage are Grover Robert, Richard and Minnie. His present wife, whom he married in Sacramento, is a native daughter of California and bore the name of Ada Shellhammer. Reared and educated in this valley, she is familiar with its possibilities and acquainted among its residents. In religion she is a believer in the doctrines of the Baptist Church and has been helpful in the local work of that denomination. Though not a partisan in politics, Mr. Alexander is a pronounced Democrat and has been a worker in local conventions of the party. In fraternal associations he holds membership with the Independent Order of Foresters at Arbuckle.

ABRAM SAMUEL LOCKE is one of the most prominent druggists of Independence, and the success which he has achieved in his chosen calling is due to his determined energy and his close application to business. He is a native of Oregon, having been born two and one-half miles from Independence, August 6, 1858. His father, Harrison P. Locke, was born near Cumberland Gap, Va., October 12, 1812, and in an early day removed to Missouri, settling in Chariton county. In 1845 he crossed the plains to Oregon and afterwards was in the service of the Hudson Bay Company, on the Columbia river. In 1849 he went to California and entered the mines. In 1850 he returned to Oregon and in 1852 took up a donation claim of six hundred and forty acres of land. In 1881 he removed to Independence, Ore., and there his death occurred in 1883. He was a successful business man and ever commanded the respect of all who knew him. His wife, whose maiden name was Malissa P. Hardison was born in Springfield, 111., and still survives her husband. They were the parents of fourteen children, eight boys and six girls, A. S. Locke of this review being the fourth in order of birth. The mother of this family is now the wife of James Masterson, who is living retired in Independence.
A. S. Locke was educated in the common schools of Independence. In 1889 he bought out a drug business in this city and in 1891 became a registered druggist. In 1892 he sold his business and removed to San Diego, Cal., on account of his wife's health. In 1894 he returned to Independence and the same year purchased a stock of groceries. On November 6, 1896, he bought a drug business and has been successfully conducting the same since. He carries a full and complete line of staple and fancy articles and the neat and attractive appearance of his store has won for him the reputation of being one of the best druggists in this city. Mr. Locke was married in Independence in 1881, to Susan Mary Alexander, who was born in Missouri and who crossed the plains with her parents in 1865. Her father, James Alexander, was born in Kentucky, and is now living retired in this city. His active years were spent in the occupation of farming, in which line of work he was very successful and became well-to-do.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Locke has been blessed with one son, Oliver Perle, aged sixteen years, who is still at home with his parents. Mr. Locke is a member of the First Baptist Church of Independence. In his political views he is a Democrat. He is a prominent member of the Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons, being past master of the Blue Lodge, a member of the Royal Arch Chapter, and Oregon Consistory No. 1, of Portland Scottish Rite and Al Kader Temple N. M. S. In the Independent Order of Odd Fellows he is noble grand, and belongs to the Woodmen of the World, and to the Ancient Order of United Workmen. He is now acting as school director and is president of the city council. He has an elegant two-story, ten-room residence on Fifth street which is constructed in a modern and beautiful style of architecture. Mr. Locke is a popular and public spirited gentleman who has at heart the best interests of the community in which he lives, and the high regard of his friends and associates.

2673. "Former Park Leader Dies," Park College Stylus, Vol. XLVIII, No. 22, 11 Feb 1944, Parkville, Platte Co., Missouri.
Word of the death of Dr. Cleland B. McAfee, which occurred Friday, February 4, at Asheville, North Carolina, was sad news to members of the Park College faculty and to all the others who knew him as a former religious leader and professor at Park.
Dr. McAfee was an outstanding intellectual influence on the Park campus in the 1890's and contributed very argely, through his command of music and his intelligent interest in art and literature, to the aesthetic and general cultural life of the college. His composition, "Near to the Heart of God" is often sung by the Park College choir.
He left Park in 1901 to become pastor of what is now the First Church of Chicago. From Chicago he went to Lafayette Avenue Church in Brooklyn. For twenty-eight years he taught in McCormick Seminary in Chicago, toward the end of which time he was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian church.
Dr. McAfee retired from his position as secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions in 1936. Since that time he ha been active traveling and lecturing; he was resting between lecture trips when death came as the result of a heart attack.
He is survived by three daughters: Mrs. George William Brown, wife of the minister of the West Presbyterian Church, Binghamton, New York, and secretary of the American Bible Society; Mrs. A. G. Parker, wife of the president of Hanover College; and Captain Mildred McAfee, president of Wellesley College and commander of the WAVES.
Dr. John A. McAfee was the first president of Park. He had five sons, Dr. Cleland B., Dr. Lapsley A., Dr. Lowell M., Mr. Howard B. and Mr. J. Earnest, and one daughter, Mrs. George S. McCune, all of whom were educated at Park.
2674. "Mrs. Cleland B. McAfee Dies in Indiana," Park College Stylus, 27 Aug 1959, Parkville, Platte Co., Missouri.
Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Cleland B> McAfee at Hanover, Indiana on July 12 at the age of 92.
Mrs. McAfee, the former Harriet Brown lived in Parkville during her girlhood, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Brown, known to many as Aunt Mercy and Uncle James. The family lived for a time in the house now occupied by Mrs. Vera Tibbetts and for a longer time in a house on Third Street now the home of Dr. and Mrs. J. B. Bisceplia. Mrs. McAfee was a graduate of Park College, class of 1888 and taught at the College for some time after her graduation. She is survived by three daughters, Katherine (Mrs. Albert G. Parker), Mildred (Mrs. Douglas Horton), and Ruth (Mrs. George Brown). All three are women of outstanding ability and capacity for leadership. Dr. McAfee died several years ago. Mrs. Parker published a delightful little book, "Near to the Heart of God," some years ago telling of the life of her parents.

I have a photocopy of the article in my files. The author quotes a fascinating passage from a speech that Mildred McAfee Horton gave at Wellesley College in 1975: "You should know that I speak as a minister's granddaughter, the daughter of a Presbyterian minister who was also a professor of theology. I am the sister-in-law of four ministers, one a Methodist, another a Baptist, the niece of at least five Presbyterian ministers, the aunt of five ministerial nephews, two of them professors in great universities, the mother-in-law of a church historian and New Testament scholar in another university - an Episcopalian - and most significant, I speak as the wife of a United Church of Christ minister whose last professional position was that of Dean of the Harvard Divinity School. How could I escape an awareness of the importance of religion?"

"William Grant Allin
The name Allin belongs among the early pioneers in Montana. William G. Allin, who at the time of his death was one of the oldest residents of Cascade County and a prominent citizen of Great Falls, was a son of the late William Allin, and father and son for many years were successfully associated in ranching and stock raising, and both have been well known leaders in state affairs and in democratic politics in Montana covering a period of half a century or more. William Grant Allin died at Great Falls, May 1, 1920.
Grant Allin, grandfather of William G. Allin, was a pioneer of Missouri, and for many years held the office of clerk of court of Randolph county, that state. He was an ardent democrat. When he left office he was succeeded by his son William Allin. William Allin was born in Kentucky , and that state was also the birth home of his wife, Amanda Allin. She died in 1882, at the age of forty-six, the mother of seven children, three of whom are still living. The late William Allin, though a native of Kentucky, spent many years in Chariton and Randolph counties, Missouri. William G. Allin was born on his father's farm in Chariton County November 19, 1856. In the meantime his father had become a California forty-niner. He went overland to the coast and spent some time in the mining districts, until the spring of 1850. He went back to Missouri, married, and was again in California for a time. In 1864 he arrived in Montana, was in the Alder Gulch mining district, and the winter of 1864-65 he and several of his companions spent in Deer Lodge Valley. He owned some mining interests near Butte. In 1866 he again crossed the country to his home on the state of Missouri. In the early '70s he was interested in Texas and lived there for a time. From 1872 to 1875 he was again in Missouri, and in the latter year came to the Chestnut Valley of Montana. This time his choice of a home was permanent, and he lived in the Chestnut Valley until his death in 1915, at the age of eighty-five. He became extensively interested in farming and cattle raising.
William G. Allin acquired his early education in the public schools of Missouri and later attended college at Huntsville, Missouri. From the time he was eighteen years of age he was closely associated with his father in livestock and ranching business. In 1914 he was appointed state stock inspector and continued to perform those duties until his death. He was a delegate to county democratic conventions in Cascade County for over thirty years, and probably no one has a better knowledge of politics in that county from the time of its organization from Meagher County. Mr. Allin was a member of the Christian Church.
July 20,1899, he married Ethel Maw, a native of England, who came to America in early childhood with her parents, who settled at Hot Springs, Arkansas. They had three children, Ethelyn, William F., and Edith."

Numbered among the energetic, self-reliant and enterprising young business men of Salisbury, Missouri, in the prime of life and with a bright future awaiting him, is the gentleman whose name heads the sketch. He was born near Renick, Randolph County, Missouri, May 1, 1859 and is the son of Joseph Allin, now a prominent citizen of this city. The mother of our subject, who in her maidenhood was a Miss Cassie Dameron, died when her son was a youth but seven years of age.
The boyhood days of our subject, prior to attaining his majority, was more or less uneventful, being spent in securing an education and assisting his father in a grocery establishment at Huntsville, Missouri. In 1880 he assumed the responsibilities of life for himself engaging in the cattle business in Montana. Ten years later, (1890), growing weary of a frontier life, our subject returned to Missouri and accepted a clerical position with his father, who in the meantime had engaged in the lumber business in Salisbury. A year later Mr. Allin engaged in the furniture business in this city and the success with which he has met and the patronage he has since enjoyed are the best recommendations for his excellent business ability and his personal adaptation to the occupation in which he is engaged.
On the 27th day of September, 1893, it was the happy fortune of our subject to be united in marriage to Miss Don Creson, one of Salisbury's fair and most worthy young ladies and the daughter of Mrs. Fannie Creson, for many years a resident of this city. This union has been a happy one and has been blessed by the birth of a bright little daughter, now 21 months old. Socially, Mr. Allin is a worthy member of the I. O. O. F., Knights of Pythias, Knights of the Maccabees and Knights of Equity, while politically he affiliates with the democratic party.

Dr. John B. Lapsley.—One of the representative men of McAfee and a much esteemed member of his profession, is Dr. John B. Lapsley. He was born in Mercer county, Kentucky, November 28, 1841, his parents being John P. and Eliza A (Johnston) Lapsley. The father, likewise a native of Mercer county, was a prominent man in his time, being a magistrate, a successful business man and a representative of his county in the state legislature. He was a thoroughly self-made man, beginning life with scarcely any education, and when a mere youth became the support of the family. He was the second child and the eldest son in a family of four children, of whom the last survivor, Dr. James T. Lapsley, the distinguished Presbyterian minister of Danville, has but recently passed awa>. John P. Lapsley died August 11, 1892, at the age of seventy- eight years. The mother was a daughter of Silas Johnston of Woodford county and was of Scotch ancestry. Her demise occurred in March, 1866, at the age of forty-eight years. The paternal grandfather was James F. Laps- ley, a native of Maryland, who came to Kentucky with his father and located either in Marion or in Garrard county. Some time after his marriage with a sister of the noted Dr. Thomas Clelland he settled in Mercer county, where his descendants have since resided.
John P. Lapsley belonged to a family of five children, of whom four were boys. His brother James H. was a man of versatile talents, during his life serving in the capacities of teacher, superintendent of schools, legislator, surveyor and farmer. His death took place in 1902. W. J. Lapsley became a minister of the gospel and died in 1880. Mary Adeline became the wife of Sam Forsythe and resides with the subject of the sketch. Thomas Clelland, a farmer, died in 1882. Dr. Lapsley was educated in the public schools, attended the high school in the neighborhood and later took a course of study in Centre College, Danville. Having attended a preliminary course of lectures, he entered Jefferson Medical College and graduated from this institution in March, 1864, with the degree of M. D. After spending several months in the Chestnut Hill Military Hospital at Philadelphia, Dr. Lapsley returned to McAfee where he began the practice of medicine, the town having ever since been the scene of his activities. About a year ago he retired from practice, and he devotes a great deal of attention to the cultivation of a farm whose principal product is tobacco. For the past fifteen years, or ever since the death of his father, he has "owned this farm, which is a part of the old family homestead.
Dr. Lapsley has always taken a keen interest in educational work and progress. For years he has been identified with the cause of the public schools and has long been a school trustee. He is a member of the Presbyterian church of McAfee which was founded by his relative, the Rev. Thomas Clelland. He has served as an elder for five years, his father before him having held this honorable office. Dr. Lapsley is identified with several organizations, among these being the Central Kentucky, Mercer County and the Kentucky State Medical Societies, and the Masons and Odd Fellows. He was a Democrat until 1896, and, although still an adherent of the old Democratic principles, since the above-named year has voted the Republican ticket. He keeps well informed as to public matters and takes keen interest in politics, but has never been a politician or office seeker.
On June 14, 1866, Dr. Lapsley laid the foundations of a happy married life by his union with Eugenia C. Armstrong, daughter of Dr. W. G. Armstrong of Mercer county, a prominent physician whose career was cut short in 1854 by his death from cholera. Dr. and Mrs. Lapsley are the parents of nine children: Mary E. is at home; John P. is a physician, living and practicing at McAfee; W. R. is a merchant and postmaster of McAfee; Helen L. is the wife of Dr. E. E. Persons of the United States army; Inez is a physician of Cincinnati, Ohio; Elizabeth is at home; A. J. is a railroad contractor, at present located in Pennsylvania; J. T. is manager of the Fred Harvey hotel and eating house system, and located in Mojave, California; Addie C. is the wife of E. W. Mills, probate judge of St. j-ouis county, Missouri. It will thus be seen that Dr. Lapsley and his family are prominent factors in the life of the community with which they and their forbears have for so many years been identified and to whose progress they have contributed in no small degree.

2696. James O'Donnell, "Lamentationes leremiae: The Missing Link,".
"On January 16, 1967, there passed away in El Paso, Texas, one of the last living links with the American frontier, Brigadier General William Jefferson Glasgow, USA (Ret.), who at 101 had been for the last three years of his life the oldest living graduate of the United States Military Academy. Born in St. Louis on May 18, 1866, William J. Glasgow was the son of Edward J. and Harriet Kennerly Glasgow. His father was at that time in the mercantile and banking business in St. Louis, but had led an adventurous life in the southwest during the days before and during the Mexican War, serving under President Van Buren as American consul at Guaymas, later setting himself up as a trader at Mazatlan, fighting under Colonel Alexander W. Doniphan, and acting towards the close of that war as American Commercial Agent at Chihuahua. (Two of Glasgow's sisters married sons of General William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.)1
Brigadier General Glasgow was survived by a short time by his wife, the former Josephine Magoffin, three years his junior; she was the daughter of former El Paso mayor Joseph Magoffin and the granddaughter of James W. Magoffin, one of the founders of El Paso. Until the general's death they lived, with their daughter Olivia Magoffin Glasgow, in the mission-style adobe Magoffin Home, the oldest house still standing in El Paso, built by Mrs. Glasgow's grandfather during the 1840's. When General Glasgow, of the West Point class of 1891, retired from the army for disability in 1927, he and his wife returned to El Paso to fix up the old homestead and live out the remaining forty years of his life;2 he was active and alert throughout his last years. (The home is now open as a museum run by the El Paso County Historical Society; with thick adobe walls, running around three sides of a courtyard opening to the west, the house is filled with the curios of several generations of pioneers. That the spirit thrives in the family is evidenced by the display (in one of the small rooms across the court from the main wing of the house) of a seven-foot ivory tusk from an elephant shot on safari by the general's son in 1959).
Though he spent forty years in the military, Glasgow never saw overseas duty in wartime. His first action out of the Academy, as a shavetail in the Cavalry, was "stern-chasing" the Apache Kid through New Mexico. But his most active period of service was under General John J. Pershing on the punitive expedition into Mexico in 1914 in pursuit of Pancho Villa after the infamous raid on Columbus, New Mexico. The records of that expedition have some blank spaces in them and it is apparently to one of those blank spaces which we owe our discovery.3
For upon General Glasgow's death, in accordance with his will, his substantial collection of public and private papers and his private library (not without its own bibliographical rarities, since some of the volumes therein were inherited by Gen. and Mrs. Glasgow from their own families) were given to the United States Government to be preserved and made available for scholars at the Fort Bliss Replica Museum in El Paso.4 That facility is not, to tell the truth, fully staffed to handle scholarly accessions of this magnitude, and the process of classifying and evaluating the holdings of the Glasgow collection is progressing slowly.
The particular item with which we are concerned is a vellum manuscript, approximately 8< by 11 inches in size, containing fifty-three leaves written on one side only, with a space of approximately one line separating each line, discovered in a file labled only "Mexico -- 1914", the other contents of which are two badly disintegrated Spanish-language newspapers (not yet identified) and a few laundry bills from a cleaners in Columbus, New Mexico.5 The manuscript itself appears to be immensely old in comparison with the other materials (this can be confirmed by an olifactory examination with appropriate equipment); it is written in Latin in an unusual script not unlike the court hand (first named by E.A. Lowe as "Smith-Corona Pica") practised in the Emirate of Granada in the fifteenth century. There is no explicit title on the first leaf of the manuscript (which does seem to be intact, containing a continuous text in its entirety), but the first line (fol. 1r) begins with the phrase Domino Hiraio ilustro et sagacisimo... " (the remainder of the website discusses this rare text)

It is one of the nicer cemeteries I've seen, with woods on three sides and large old oak trees on its grounds. At this time, there are approximately 735 burials in the cemetery. There were a few stones that were illegible due to erosion and two other stones that were written in a foreign language I couldn't decipher. There are no unmarked graves that I'm aware of."

Shotgun Honeymoon?
Beriah Magoffin Jr. and Charlotte Bird Mondscheen were married in 1907. "Dad didn't tell mother she had chosen a date right in the middle of hunting season," Susan Shelby Magoffin Stoker said in an oral interview. "For a wedding trip they took the train to Deerwood, deposited mother's wardrobe at the boarding house and went duck hunting for several days." In some cases, that would have been the end of the romance right there, but for this couple it was just starting off right. " Mother liked to hunt," their daughter explained. "He gave her a 10 gauge shotgun and she hunted for some years, and I've seen a classic picture of her sitting on a muskrat house in long skirts and a hat with a gun. . . . a hunting family, that's for certain."

The Magoffin family
Morton Magoffin said he owed part of his success in combat to his upbringing in Deerwood and the surrounding area, according to family. His father was an avid small game hunter in addition to big game in the U.S. and abroad. Morton followed his footsteps from the time he was a small child.
He said he learned those difficult "deflection" shots - being able to hit a moving target from a moving platform (not an easy task and very important in aerial combat) hunting with his father. Hunting was the family's main pastime. Morton's sister, Susan, also raised in Deerwood, was a nationally known wing-shooter. She recently passed away in Wayzata. Mort's mother, Charlotte, was an avid duck and goose hunter and used a 10-gauge shotgun. She and her husband, Beriah, went duck hunting on their honeymoon in 1907. They had just taken a train to Deerwood to start their married life and with Morton starting his new job at Hanna Mining they built an imposing home on Lake Reno that is still standing.
The Magoffins were originally from Kentucky, emigrating from County Down in Ireland. Morton's great-grandfather, Beriah Magoffin, was governor of Kentucky before the Civil War. Beriah's brother, Ebenezer, was a colonel in the Union Army, who fought in the Civil War. Another brother, Joseph, served in the Civil War as a colonel, and ended up as the mayor of El Paso, Texas. A sister, Shelby Magoffin, was one of the first frontiers women in U.S. history, accompanying General Stephen Kearney on his first expedition to the Southwest and into Mexico. She became a noted author, recounting her travel and experiences. Finally, honoring the Magoffins, a warship of W.W.II was named after them; the USS Magoffin, APA 199, that saw action in the Pacific. Morton Magoffin of Minnesota had some very impressive lives to live up to. He certainly did do that.

Crow Wing County has its share of war heroes, with a few who are virtually unknown by residents.
How many know that the small city of Deerwood produced a West Point graduate who ended up in the Air Corps, fought at Pearl Harbor, then in Europe, and then became part of that legendary (and very small) group known as "Fighter Aces." This may be one of Deerwood's "best-kept secrets."
His name - Morton David Magoffin, who died last summer in California at the age of 91. It is hard to place a measure on heroism, but if there was, "Mort" Magoffin would rank near the top.

He may be one of Deerwood's "best-kept secrets."]
Magoffin was born in Deerwood on Feb. 1, 1916, the son of Beriah and Charlotte Magoffin. Beriah was a mining engineer, a graduate of Virginia Military Institute and the Michigan College of Mines, now Michigan Technological University. Before settling in Deerwood in 1907 he had spent a year in Alaska and the Yukon (the Klondike Rush and Indian River). While living in Deerwood, Beriah worked for the Hanna Mining Co. until his death in 1940.
Morton's mother, Charlotte, traveled the world for years, before and after World War II and accumulated a large collection of dolls; she left them to the Crow Wing Historical Society, and the approximately 200 authentic costumed ethnic dolls, from the most exotic places, are on display in the sheriff's residence in Brainerd.
Morton graduated from Crosby-Ironton High School on May 31, 1933; three brothers also attended Crosby-Ironton in the '30s, and also were in service in WWII. Morton was accepted at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, at the age of 17. He graduated from West Point with an exemplary record on June 12, 1937, at the top of his class, at the U.S. Army Air Corps Flying School at Kelly Field in Texas. He was then assigned to the 1st Pursuit Group at Selfridge Field in Michigan, Eddie Rickenbacker's old "Hat in the Ring" 94th Pursuit Squadron. He was flying the new Seversky P-35. He made a bit of history when he was determined to save the airplane when the engine cut out, and he had to make a dead stick landing, with an airplane that glided like a streamlined brick. He tore up a couple of fields, tore down three fences and had a very irate farmer to cope with ... but Morton survived.
He served in the states until March 1941. Then was sent to Hawaii and was based at Wheeler Field when the Dec. 7, 1941, attack occurred. Morton was in action from the first day of the war flying the P-40 Warhawk. This fighter was already obsolescent, but it had become famous as the "shark-toothed" mount of the Flying Tigers, the AVG pilots in China. It was still an effective fighter if piloted by men like Magoffin. He did survive Pearl Harbor Day to fight again.
He was later assigned to duty back on the mainland; the Army Air Forces had bigger plans for him. He rose in rank to lieutenant colonel, and was selected to command the newly organized 362nd Fighter Group (9th Air Force). They needed men with his experience to train men for the impending combat tour to Europe. They soon embarked for England and became the first fighter group using the new P-47 Thunderbolt (affectionately named the "Jug" because of its shape like a moonshiner's whiskey jug).
He flew his first mission in February 1944, escorting B-24 bombers, attempting to destroy the German V bomb launching sites near Pas de Calais, in northern France.
He was in command of three squadrons in his group, but he did not stay on the base like many C.O.'s would have. He flew nearly every mission with his men, accompanying and leading them on the most hazardous flights. He was exceptionally aggressive as a flight leader, but not foolhardy; he had great piloting skills. Until April 1944, his group was engaged primarily in escorting bombers and attacking communication centers in France and Belgium in preparation for the upcoming invasion of Normandy. Mort was promoted to full colonel but refused the desk job he was selected for and kept flying his group. On a mission on April 17, 1944, he downed a German plane, a Messerschmitt Me-109, his first aerial victory. After the invasion the group moved to Lignerolles, and on July 8 he shot down his second fighter, a Fock-Wolf FW-190. On July 13 he shot down two FW-190's in less than five minutes, bringing his tally to four. He encountered heavy ground fire on the next mission, and he had another "dead stick" landing (in a very heavy airplane) fortunately finding a British landing strip at Caen, France.
There was a crack in the No. 10 cylinder, oil covered his windshield, and it was a miracle he could set it down. That was the last time he flew "Carol Ann" (named after the middle names of his two oldest daughters). But a couple of days later he was back in the cockpit of "Carol Ann II."
On July 31 he was in a life-and-death battle with a skilled German pilot ... a "dogfight" that lasted much longer than the average encounter, but Magoffin was finally able to get on his tail and fire the last shots. He followed the smoking plane as it quickly lost altitude and he was able to witness the crash. To verify a victory, the pilot had to be certain of the destruction of the plane; preferably with gun camera verification; if that was not possible, other pilots, or U.S. ground forces who witnessed the battle could verify the crash.
Morton Magoffin was now an "Ace," with the necessary five confirmed victories. But regardless of superb flying skills, all pilots are subject to ground fire and this finally hit Morton; he was shot down over France in August 1944 and captured by the Germans. He had been severely wounded by the ground fire before bailing out, and the Germans placed him in a hospital at Etain, France. A few days later he was transferred by the Germans to another hospital in Paris. A few days after that, he was released from captivity when the allies took Paris. Magoffin had completed 84 combat missions, before the ill-fated 85th.
After undergoing several operations, he finally returned to the states. After recovering from his wounds, he accepted assignments in California, North Carolina and then Alaska, where he served in the Air Training Command. While in Alaska, he had the misfortune of a "flame-out" of the jet fighter he was flying, leading to a crash landing and breaking his back. Again, he recovered quite soon and went back to active duty. He taught at the War College in Montgomery, Ala., before going to the Pentagon to serve in War Plans for two years. He was next sent to Korea, where he was in charge of the Air Base at Seoul for a year. He then served at Mather Field (Sacramento) until his lingering injuries forced an early retirement; he completed his career as a colonel in 1958.
Morton Magoffin died on July 10, 2007, at his Pleasanton, Calif., home at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife and three daughters, all of California and Florida.
His second great distinction, beside becoming an "Ace," was being awarded the nation's second-highest honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, for extraordinary valor in combat. In addition, his other awards were the Silver Star with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart and the Air Medal with 16 Oak Leaf Clusters. He was also awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre and the French Croix de Guerre.
The men who flew fighter planes were all joined by a common bond of almost mystical quality. They were compared with the knights of old, jousting on horseback, individual against individual, in mortal combat. As the fighter pilot rose above the impersonal nature of warfare, so did another group of unusual men rise above their fellow pilots ... to become this inner and elite brotherhood ... of Aces. Only 2 percent of all wartime fighter pilots have become an Ace. Morton Magoffin was one.
A distinguished military career when you add it all up - West Point graduate, Pearl Harbor survivor, 85 hazardous combat missions, achieving the rare "Ace," shot down, wounded in action, prisoner of war, awarded the second-highest military honor, high level service in the peacetime Air Force.
If he and his exploits were, in fact, a "best-kept secret," he can now be honored by the citizens of Crow Wing County, along with all other area veterans who have served their country.
Osborne "Ozzy" Groethe, a World War II veteran and historian, writes primarily on the WWII air war with an emphasis on Fighter Aces. He has performed volunteer work for the American Fighter Aces Association now located in the Seattle Air Museum. He now lives in Alexandria but spent most of his life in Maple Grove. He is a native of North Dakota.

Ebenezer Magoffin was born in Missouri on November 4,1868 to Beriah and Manlius Magoffin. He was descended from Governor Beriah Magoffin of Kentucky, and General David Thomson. These were wealthy slaveholding families until the Civil War. In 1883 the family moved to Washington, D.C., and then to Dakota Territory near Redfield, South Dakota where Beriah Magoffin had contracts on several mail routes. During 1883-84 Ebenezer served as a page boy in the U.S. House of Representatives and also attended Spencerian Business College. In 1886 the family moved to Monango in Dickey County and established the Monango Mercantile Cash Co. In 1895 they established briefly the Magoffin and Son Cheeze Factory. In June 1897 Mr. Magoffin married Fannie Helferty of Monango and they had a daughter, Fannie. In 1898 his wife died, and in 1902 he married Amy Northrop, a teacher. She was the daughter of Theodorus Northrop, a Dickey County pioneer and a member of North Dakota's Constitutional Convention. They had one daughter, Lois. Mr. Magoffin died January 31, 1953 in Evanston, Illinois and Amy Magoffin died ca. March 28, 1957 in Texas. They are both buried in Monango.
Mr. Magoffin was camp clerk and Secretary of Modern Woodmen of America for over 50 years going back to 1893. He was elected State Senator from Dickey County on the Democratic ticket in 1936 and 1938. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church of Monango and a Mason.

The Louisville Times of August I5th contained the following account of the marriage of Lucien Beckner, Omega '93: " Last evening, at the parsonage of the Centenary M. E. Church, on East Elm street, in New Albany, Lucien Beckner, of Winchester, Ky., and Miss Marie Davis Warren, of Danville, were married by the Rev. W. B. Collins. The affair was a genuine elopement, there having been parental objections on account of the youth of the bride, who is but eighteen years of age." A special from Danville in the same issue gave this account of the affair: " Great surprise was created here this morning by the receipt of a telegram from Louisville announcing the marriage of Miss M. Warren, the handsome daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Warren, of this city, to Lucien Beckner, son of Judge Wm. M. Beckner, of Winchester. Miss Warren took advantage of her mother's absence from the city yesterday and went to Louisville, where she met young Beckner. He was a student here two years ago, but no one suspected that there was a love affair."

Hello Jenny,
I was forwarded your website link- Descendants of John McAfee Sr., by Dick Geiger. Fascinating information and very well researched. I'm fairly certain that our lines connect through the McAfee line and possibly the Curry line as well. I'm in the process of attaching my personal information with my aunt and mother to become a member of the DAR. Once that process is complete and more detailed, I would like to compare your info with mine. I've known that my ancestors came from Mercer Co. KY and traveled to Illinois and Missouri. I was born in northern Indiana, but my mother and her parents are both from Hannibal, Missouri (Marion Co.).
My great-great grandmother was Mary Jane Curry (b: 20 Nov 1851 in Schuyler Co. Illinois). She is the daughter of Matthew Curry ( b: 1806 Mercer Co. KY) and Nancy Simpson. Mary Jane Curry married James Henry White on 20 Sep 1868 in Schuyler Co. IL. I have a copy of their marriage certificate also. They had (9) children, my great-grandfather was the 6th child. His name was Tony Matthew White, born 03 May 1881 in Whiteside, Lincoln Co. Missouri. He married Nona Mae Turner (born 12 Dec 1886, Ralls Co. Missouri) on 15 Apr 1903 in Monroe City, MO. They had (6) children. My grandfather is Wallace Benjamin White, born 09 May 1905 in Wither Mills, MO. He died 13 Dec 1976 in Hannibal, Missouri.
I've most likely overwhelmed you a bit, but I just wanted to give you some basic information to make the initial connection. Like I mentioned, once I have my line connected to my Patriot ancestors through the DAR, I would like to share it with you if you are interested.
Thank you for your wonderful effort! It was a great read.
Best Regards,
Daniele Nadon-Paston

John B. Hawkins.—An intelligent and thriving agriculturist of Sullivan county, John B. Hawkins owns and occupies a valuable farming property in Cass township and is there numbered among the valued and trustworthy citizens of the place, fulfilling his duties and obligations as such with fidelity. A son of Tarlton Hawkins, he was born February 22, 1852, in Hamilton township, Sullivan county. Abraham Hawkins, the grandfather of John B., was of Scottish birth. Emigrating to this country, he located first in Alabama, and subsequently, not so very long after his marriage with Sarah Dowall, he came across the country to Indiana, settling in Lawrence county in pioneer times. He bought extensive tracts of land, and for many years carried on general farming and stock- raising on a large scale, living there until his death.
Born in Lawrence county, Indiana, Tarlton Hawkins was reared to agricultural pursuits, and later became a farmer from choice. Locating in Sullivan county in 1845, he bought a tract of land lying about five miles northeast of Sullivan, and at once took possession of the log house that stood in a clearing that had previously been made. He made good improvements on the land and resided there a number of years. Moving then to Sullivan, he built up a substantial business as a dealer in grain and agricultural implements, remaining there for some time. When ready to give up active business, he returned to the farm, and there lived retired until his death, November 15, 1895. His wife, whose maiden name was Mary M. Bailey, was born in Lawrence county, Indiana, and died in Sullivan county in 1897. Her father, Elder John Bailey, was born in Kentucky, but came to Indiana when young and was a pioneer preacher of the Christian church in Lawrence county. About 1845 he settled in Sullivan county, taking up land about four miles north of Sullivan, and in addition to farming continued his ministerial labors, preaching at Sullivan, Micldletown, Palmer's Prairie Church, and in other places. Both he and his wife, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Henry, spent their last days on the home farm. Tarlton Hawkins and his wife reared ten children, namely: George R., Sarah E., Clementine, John B.., Isabelle, Achsah, Elorence, Mary, Ward and Mae.
John B. Hawkins was brought up on the home farm, and under the wise instruction of his father early became familiar with the various branches of agriculture, remaining beneath the parental roof until attaining his majority. Going to Texas in 1873, he spent a year in Grayson county, but not liking the place, returned to Indiana and resumed work on his father's farm. Coming to Cass township in 1888, Mr. Hawkins bought the farm on which he now resides, and has since been busily employed in its improvement. These are of an excellent character, the frame buildings which he has erected being substantial and conveniently arranged, the orchard containing a variety of fruit trees, and the land being in a fine state of cultivation. Here he is carrying on general farming and stock-raising with unquestioned success.
On December 31, 1871, Mr. Hawkins married Sarah A. Brodie. who was born February 25, 1856, in Cass township, a daughter of William Allen Brodie. Her grandfather, Samuel Brodie, born November 20, 1790, was a pioneer of Sullivan county. He located first on Shaker Prairie, but afterwards entered government land in sections six and thirty-one of Cass township, and a portion of his original purchase is now owned by his grandchildren. Improving a good homestead, he resided on it until his death, January 12, 1852. He married Ann Curry, who was born December 24, 1781, and died July 12, 1864. A native of Sullivan county, Indiana, William Allen Brodie was born September 30, 1811, in Hacldon township, and was there reared to a farmer's life. Starting out for himself, he settled on a tract of timbered land in section six, Cass township, and lived first in a log cabin. Successful in his operations, he cleared much land, erected a good set of frame buildings, and from time to time added by purchase to his real estate, at the time of his death, September 29, 1892, being the owner of more than three hundred acres. He married Mary J. Maxwell, who was born on Curry's Prairie October 4, 1827. Her father, Levi Maxwell, was born near Richmond, Indiana, September 23, 1809, and was one of the early settlers of Sullivan county. Buying land, he improved a homestead on which he spent the remainder of his life, passing away June 11, 1897. He married Nancy Carruthers, who was born March 24, 1805, and died February 12, 1834. The wife of William Allen Brodie survived him, dying December 14, 1895.
