ANDY CURRY has been a resident of Montgomery County for thirty-four years. To an older generation of the people of this county he is well remembered as a successful teacher. For nearly a quarter of a century he has been in the insurance business at Coffeyville and has built up one of the largest local agencies in the state for general insurance.

His ancestors were Irish people who came to America and settled in Kentucky in the very early days. From Kentucky the family moved to Southern Indiana, locating in the Wabash valley, and it was in Sullivan County, Indiana, that Andy Curry was born December 2, 1855. His grandfather, Samuel Curry, was born in Mercer County, Kentucky, in 1789, the year that George Washington was inaugurated as the first president of the United States, and a date which attests the very early settlement of the Curry family in the blue grass region. Samuel Curry crossed the Ohio River and settled in Sullivan County, Indiana, along with the first movement of population into that region, was a farmer there, and died in 1869. He was a strong democrat, and a consistent member and elder of the Presbyterian Church. Grandfather Curry married Sallie Thompson, who was born in Virginia and died in Sullivan County, Indiana, at the age of ninety years. None of their children are now living.

John S. Curry, father of Andy, was born in Kentucky in 1817, and was a small child when his parents moved to Sullivan County, Indiana. He grew up there, married in that county, and became a carpenter and builder. In that trade he assisted in constructing a great many houses and other buildings throughout the district south of Terre Haute. He died in Sullivan County in 1871. He was a democrat and a member of the Presbyterian Church. John S. Curry married Nancy C. Wilson, who represented another pioneer family of Sullivan County, where she was born in 1826. She died at Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1891. Their children were: Samuel, who became a farmer, later retiring to Terre Haute, where he died in 1908; Sarah, who died at Shelburn, Indiana, married John Siner, a farmer, also deceased; Margaret, who died in Sullivan county, married Anderson Mitchell, a retired farmer in Vigo County, Indiana; Martha, who lives with her brother Andy at Coffeyville, has lost three husbands, John Adams, a farmer, Jeptha Baldridge, a merchant, and James McKee, a farmer; H. W. Curry is a teacher living at Terre Haute; John F. died at Shelburn, Indiana, in 1874, at the age of twenty-two; the seventh in age is Andy; Robert B. died at the age of fourteen; Arpa is the wife of William T. Bolinger, a retired farmer at Caney, Kansas; Nancy, who died at Terre Haute, was the wife of Spencer McGrew, a hardware merchant, now deceased.

Reared in the country districts of Sullivan County, Andy Curry acquired a common school education, and availed himself of such opportunities as were presented to him not only to secure an education, but also to qualify as a teacher of others. For several terms he attended the Indiana State Normal School at Terre Haute. In the meantime he had begun teaching in the country districts and followed that vocation in Indiana for six years. In March, 1882, Mr. Curry arrived in Coffeyville, Kansas, and during the next eight years was a teacher in the country schools of Montgomery County, and during part of that time also followed farming.

Since the spring of 1890 he has lived in Coffeyville. In that city for seven years he was clerk in a clothing store, was in the wholesale cigar business for two years, and has since been an insurance man and has built up a large business in the city and also operates as a broker. His offices are in the Terminal Building. His home is at 708 Willow Street.

While living in Parker Township, as a teacher and farmer, he served two terms as township trustee. At Coffeyville he has been honored again and again with a place on the school board and also as a member of the city council. The citizens of Coffeyville remember to his special credit his work as mayor, an office to which he was elected in 1913 for two years. One feature of his administration was the construction of a large dam at the waterworks and the introduction of such improvements as to make the city water plant one of greatly increased efficiency. While mayor he insisted upon a strict enforcement of the laws and ordinances and the city was so well governed that there was no occasion for state officials to intervene in local affairs.

Mr. Curry is a democrat, is a member of the Coffeyville Commercial Club, and is affiliated with Lodge No. 117, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Camp No. 665, Modern Woodmen of America, and Lodge No. 775, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, all of Coffeyville.

In October, 1879, in Vigo County, Indiana, Mr. Curry married Miss Ella E. Seldomridge, daughter of John M. and Alice Seldomridge, both now deceased. Her father was a miller and afterwards a farmer. Mr. and Mrs. Curry have one daughter, Bonnie, who is a graduate of the Coffeyville High School, and is now the wife of R. K. Long, an oil producer and operator living at Coffeyville.

JOHN F. CURRY was born near Terre Haute, Ind., February 28, 1824, son of James and Isabella (Hogg) Curry, natives of Kentucky, who came to Indiana among the earliest settlers near Vincennes, and engaged in farming, dying in Knox County. Our subject, at the age of fourteen years, served as apprentice in the tailor ship of Peter Hawk, at Carlisle, where he remained five years, when he started in business for himself. In 1846, he quit the tailoring business, and began clerking for J. M. Parvin at Carlisle in the dry goods, staying with him until 1863, when he went to Illinois, remaining six years, and in 1869 returned to Carlisle. In 1872, he was elected Sheriff of Sullivan County, and moved to Sullivan. In 1875, he went into the grocery business, being still engaged in the same. Mr. Curry belongs to one of the oldest families of the county. He was married, February 18, 1847, to Miss Isabell Colshear, who bore him three children--Samuel and James (deceased), and Laura, wife of Thomas W. Anderson, who resides at Fort Worth, Texas. Mrs. Curry died May 28, 1851, and October 8, 1853, Mr. Curry was married to Mary McClanahan, a daughter of John and Elizabeth (McCrary) McClanahan, natives of Kentucky, and to this union were born two children--Hosea Coleman, and John Rush (deceased). He and family are members of the Presbyterian Church, and he is an Odd Fellow, Sullivan Lodge, No. 147. Politically, Mr. Curry is a Republican, and is the only Sheriff elected by that party."

"The 17th of Feb was the 50th anniv. of the marr. ceremony of David and Sophia Galey, but owing to the sickness in the family, the event was not celebrated until Wed March 16 at which time there gathered together at the residence in Brown Twp about 40 persons, consisting of children, grandchildren and gr. grandchildren, nephews, nieces and neighbors. There was only one person present who was at the wedding 50 years ago that was Andrew Snyder who is in his 80th year, being the oldest man in the township. After a bountiful repast from a table groaning under an immense lot of good things of the land and we were gathered around, Uncle David remarked that he would stand it so he could be what was going on. After a few appropriate remarks by Samuel R. Fisher, the old people were presented with a rocking chair for each and invited to a seat after which Uncle David was present with a gold headed cane and Aunt Sophia with a gold thimble and other "presents." They express their heartfelt thanks for the presents and for the respect shown them in their declining years. It was a day well spent and will be remembered by all for many years to come."

JOHN McElroy

(Farmer, Post-office, Shelbyville).

Mr. McElroy's father, born in Kentucky in 1802, and one of the early settlers of Marion county, in this State, is still living, and is, perhaps, one of the best preserved old men in the State. He is still apparently as active and as vigorous in mind as he was 25 years ago, and now, in his eighty-thu"d year, thinks nothing of mounting a horse and riding a day's journey, 20 or 30 miles. His life, too, has been one of indefatigable industry, not to say extremely hard work and severe exposures. But blessed with a good physicial constitution and a cheerful mind, he has traveled the road of life through all the seasons and changes that have come, with courage and a hopeful disposition, and now at a time when all, or nearly all, of his former contemporaries have passed beyond the Western horizon of their earthly careers, and are seen no more, he is still comparatively hale and hearty among the living, bright in mind and hopeful, and with the prospect of more years to mingle with those around him of younger generations. To his first and only wife, formerly Miss Catherine McAfee, he was married in Marion county. She died in 1859. She was also originally from Kentucky. She had borne him six children, John, the subject of this sketch, being the eldest : and but two others are living. In early life, in Kentucky, he was engaged in merchandising, but in 1830 he came to Marion county. Mo., where he entered land and improved a large farm. His life afterwards was devoted mainly to farming. John McElroy was born on the farm in Marion county, July 6, 1836. After he grew up he was married to Miss Levina Blackwood, and he con- tinued to reside in Marion county until 1872, when he bought the prairie land where he now lives, and improved his farm in this county. He has a good place of 160 acres, devoted mainly to grass and for stock-raising purposes. He is one of the hard working, thorough- going farmers of the township, and one of its well respected citizens. Mr. McElroy's first wife died in the summer of 1877. She had borne him 10 children, seven of whom are living, namely: William P., Samuel O., Catherine, Anna H., Susie and John. To his present wife Mr. McElroy was married December 25, 1881. She is a daughter of Sanford Smith, and a sister to Solomon D. Smith, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this volume. Her Christian name is Hattie. She has borne her husband two children, the eldest of whom died in infancy ; the second one is Levina.

(excerpt)"In 1859, Dr. W. C. Warren, a native of Greene County, Alabama, came to Waterford for the practice of his profession.  Dr. Warren was most successful in the practice of his profession and also did well financially.  A brother, who came with him to Waterford, became a historian of note.  He held a Ph. D. degree and was for many years, connected with the early Archives and History Department of Mississippi.  Dr. Warren compiled a history of the Chickasaw Indians of North Mississippi that is most comprehensive and is the most dependable source of information of these Indians.

Following recovery from the War, Waterford was a busy and prosperous little town for many years.  In 1910, James B. Warren, a son of Dr. Warren, decided to develop the business potentials of Waterford.  He established a bank, built stores and promoted other projects.  For a time the new business enterprises prospered, but the country was on the eve of a new order.  The advent of the automobile, construction of all weather roads, as well as a rapidly changing national economy, were all adverse to the development of the small inland towns.  The day of big business had begun and the population was rapidly shifting from rural to urban.  So, Waterford, like so many other historic old towns in all sections of the country, was relegated to a status in the new era consistent with its natural and economic potentials at the local level."

Hi Jenny,

Happy to help. As you can imagine, "McDannald" has always been spelled many ways and in many cases depending on their degree of education, it stayed that way.
I think most of the people spelling that last name spelled it as McDonald because it was a more familier spelling to them. In my years, many people to this date still want to spell it "McDonald." They just don't spell what they hear.

Don't know how Elizabeth got to Caldwell, TX where they got married. If you ever find out, let me know. I will say that many residents of that area migrated south to TX or west to CA. I think it came down to raw opportunity. I don't have much on Elizabeth's 9 sibs. Maybe she traveled with a brother or a sister's family south?

Adam had 2 brothers and all migrated away from Bath County, VA. John, III went to Western Ohio and Joshua went to Indiana. I beleive they went west because of Opportunity. I know the parents went to Ohio where the mother died and then the father returned home to Bath County, VA and the sons left from there to where they ended up. I think John, II went to OH because of land he got from serving in the military. Many got paid that way.

About Adam's children, Charles married an Ada Tooke and they remained in Lockhart, Caldwell, TX and had a son Charles Malcolm McDannald. I don't have any marriage, etc info on his Charles' 3 sibs. If you find anything, please let me know.

Best regards,

Clyde

1246. Dick Geiger <dickgeiger -at- aol.com>, "Descendants of George Ann McAfee & Charles Theodore Ratcliffe," 23 Jan 2009.
Obituary taken from the Alexandria Daily Town Talk of 23 September 1912:

Deaths:

RATCLIFFE - In Alexandria, La., on Sunday night, September 22nd, 1912, at 11:50 o'clock, at the residence of Wm. Harris, corner 4th and Washington Streets, Mrs. Georgia McAfee Ratcliffe, aged seventy-five years.

The funeral services will be conducted from the above residence at 4:30 p.m. today, Monday, Sept. 23rd, and proceed thence to the Methodist Cemetery, Pineville, for interment.

The deceased was a native of Christian Co., Ky., and the widow of the late Dr. C. T. Ratcliffe, who practiced his profession in this city from 1881 until the time of his death in 1886 [sic].

Mrs. Ratcliffe moved here with her family from Hopkinsville, Ky., in 1881, and resided here until 1888, two years after the death of her husband, when she removed to New Orleans, where she resided for several years. From New Orleans, she moved with her son and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Vinson, to Convington, La., where they resided until two months ago, when they returned to this city.

Mrs. Ratcliffe had been in exceptionally good health up to last Wednesday when she was taken suddenly ill, and her death was a great surprise to her family.

She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. A. F. Simonin, of New Orleans, Mrs. T. L. Ethridge [sic] and Mrs. J. D. Vinson, of this city.

"Charles Theodore Ratcliffe got his M.D. degree in March 1853 at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. He moved from Hopkinsville, KY to Alexandria, LA in 1880 after having practiced medicine in Christian CO, KY for 18 years. His family followed him there in 1881, when my grandmother Mary Ratcliffe Geiger Etheredge Zoder was 10 years old (from her obit).

I went by the First Presbyterian Church here on the way home from the synagogue. Tomorrow someone there is going to help me find the old records. I have read that my great-grandmother Georgia Anne McAfee Ratcliffe was a charter member of that church in 1891.

I also still have the Methodist Church to visit, as (Georgia Anne's son) George McAfee Ratcliffe and his wife Susie Hetherwick Ratcliffe seem to have gone to that church."

Article taken from the Alexandria Weekly Town Talk of 06 July 1889:

"DIFFICULTY AND HOMICIDE

It has been nearly five years since the TOWN TALK was called upon to chronicle a homicide within the corporate limits of Alexandria.

On last Monday afternoon, the 1st inst., at about 2:20 o'clock, the report of a gun was heard from the direction of Fourth street. It was heard by a number of people, many of whom thought that the City Marshall had shot a dog. Soon a crowd had collected at the scene of the shooting, on Fourth street, in the rear of Mrs. Ratcliffe's residence, and M. W. Cockerille was found lying on the ground, suffering from a gun shot wound in the small of his back, near the termination of the spine.

It was soon generally known that Henry Ratcliffe had done the shooting, the weapon used being a shotgun loaded with buck-shot, and his brother George Ratcliffe was accused of being a party to the killing.

Montfort Cockerille was taken to his home on lower 4th street on a cot, and after about 1 1/2 hours of intense suffering, passed away. Three physicians were in attendance, but the wound was necessarily fatal, and their skill was of no avail.

Henry Ratcliffe surrendered immediately to the Sheriff, and as soon as an affidavit was made against George Ratcliffe, he also surrendered.

Judge Blackman being related to the deceased young man by marriage he recused himself, and Judge Coco was summoned from Marksville to hold the preliminary examination.

The preliminary trial commenced about 3 o'clock p.m. on Wednesday and continued till 8 1/2 o'clock that night. It was resumed on Thursday morning, the 4th, by consent of the State and defense, and was concluded about 10 o'clock a.m. Judge Coco allowed the accused bond in the sum of $2500 each, which they readily furnished.

About 40 witnesses were summoned. The principle witnesses for the State were Dr. John Casson, coroner; W. J. Calvit, S. L. Cockerille, Miss Eliza Holt, Oliver Bassett, Francis Carr and Mrs. Richardson.

The principle witnesses examined for the defense were Mrs. E. B. Price, Miss Jennie Ratcliffe and Joseph Smith.

Knowing that all our readers are interested in this sad affair, we give below some of the evidence of important witnesses at the preliminary trial:

S. L. Cockerille testified that as he and his brother Montfort were passing along Fourth street, in the rear of the residence of Mrs. Ratcliffe, that George Ratcliffe opened [several words illegible here] toward him, and said: "I received your letter." Cockerille then says he made a reply, whereupon George Ratcliffe struck him on the head with a walking cane, simultaneously Henry Ratcliffe fired the gun which killed his brother. That his brother did not have even a stick in his hand, and that both of them were in their shirt sleeves. That Henry Ratcliffe was just within his mother's back gate, when the gun fired. That George Ratcliffe ran him (Lee Cockerille) some distance striking him with a stick, and that after George Ratcliffe had ceased striking him that he returned to where his brother was lying on the ground, and that he did not touch him. He believes the only person he saw when he returned to his brother was Henry Ratcliffe. That the reason he, S. L. Cockerille, ran was because he thought Henry Ratcliffe was going to shoot him with the other barrel of the gun.

In the evidence the following was brought out: It seemed that a few days previous to the homicide S. L. Cockerille sent a colored boy to Geo. Ratcliffe, and that the boy returned to Cockerille with a verbal message from George Ratcliffe. S. L. Cockerille when he received that verbal message wrote a letter and sent it to George Ratcliffe. Cockerille admitted in his evidence that he had said in his letter that, if he, George Ratcliffe, had made certain assertions that the colored boy said he had, that he, George Ratcliffe, "was a willful, malicious liar and the truth was not in him: I (Cockerille) throw down the gauntlet and if you choose you can pick it up."

One of the principle witnesses for the defense was a man named Joseph Smith, who lives on the Heyman place. He says he saw the entire difficulty. He admitted having gone out of town hurriedly to keep from being a witness. That he had only told one person, confidentally, he had seen the killing. His testimony reduced was that he had seen Montfort Cockerille change a stick from his right hand to his left hand and then put his hand behind him as if to pull a weapon. Just at that moment, and before the gun was fired, he heard some one say: "Don't shoot my brother."

It was brought out in the testimony of Wm. Hill that George Ratcliffe had recently bought a new shot-gun, that he had told him (Hill) and other friends that he intended to try it with buckshot to see if it acted well. Also by other witnesses that Henry Ratcliffe and A. L. Miller were to leave for White Sulphur Springs on Monday evening, and that Henry Ratcliffe was to borrow the shot-gun, and at the time the difficulty took place George and Henry Ratcliffe were on their way to the back of town to try the gun with buckshot before Henry left for the Springs, the hour for leaving being about 8 o'clock, p.m.

The dying statements of Montfort Cockerille to his mother and Mrs. Nettie Calvit were to the effect that he had been shot for nothing, that he had done nothing nor said nothing [sic] to be killed for.

Mr. E. G. Hunter is counsel for the accused; and District Attorney Andrews looked after the State.
Montfort and S. L. Cockerille are the sons of the late Dr. A. Cockerille. Montfort at the time of his death was about 30 years old and was keeping a grocery store on upper Third street. His brother kieeps a saloon on the same street.

George and Henry Ratcliffe keep a grocery on Second street. They are the sons of the late Dr. Ratcliffe who practiced medicine in this parish for several years, but came here with his family about eight years ago from Hopkinsville, Ky."

Hi Jenny,

Let me introduce myself...I am Marion Winborn, a g-g granddaughter of Georgia Ann McAfee who was the daughter of George Greathouse McAfee & Martha Edmunds.

My cousin, Rona O'regan, and our spouses are planning to attend the McAfee reunion in Harrodsburg in October.

I recently came across your extensive research on the McAfees and would like to make a correction on America's nickname. It was Mec not Mee. The same is true of America Short Edmunds. She too was Mec.

I have pictures of Georgia McAfee, America McAfee Simonin, Sally & Edwin Short Edmunds, and one that I think is George Greathouse McAfee. My cousin has George G.McAfee's diploma from Centre college as well as numerous letters from Dr. Charles T. Ratcliffe to his wife Georgia Ann McAfee. She also has some of the death notices for their children, and the family bible. I am sure that we can bring some of these things to the reunion if you will be there and would like to see them. I can also furnish you with names, some dates, and spouses of our line down to the present.

LINDSAY HUGHES BLANTON, D.D., chancellor of Central University, Ky., was born in Cumberland Co., Va., January 29, 1832, and is the second son of Joseph and Susan (Walker) Blanton. Joseph Blanton was born in Cumberland Co., Va., in 1805. He was educated in Virginia and became a large and prosperous planter. He was an active Whig before the war, but afterward affiliated with the Democratic party. He died in 1881. He was a son of David Blanton, a native of Caroline County, Va., and of English extraction and died when yet a young man. He had married Lucy Johns, a native of Cumberland County, Va. She was an intelligent and well informed lady and lived to be over ninety years old. Her ancestors came from England in the early settlement of Virginia. Susan(Walker) Blanton was born in Cumberland County, Va., in 1814, and was a daughter of John W. Walker, who married Susan Berryman. John Walker was a substantial planter and died young, leaving a son and a daughter. His father was William Walker, a native of Virginia, who distinguished himself under Gen. George Washington, in the war of Independence. He is the great-grandfather also of Judge Thomas H. Hines, of Kentucky, and was of Scotch extraction. Dr. Blanton was educated at Hampden Sidney College, Virginia, from which institution he was graduated in the class of 1853. His theological training was received at the Union Theological Seminary and at Danville Theological Seminary, from which latter institution he was graduated in 1857. He was soon after licensed to preach, and ordained and installed as pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Versailles, Ky., in 1858, where he continued in the performance of successful pastoral work until the fall of 1861, when, owing to his warm sympathy for the South in the prevailing civil contest between the States, he resigned his pastorate and returned to Virginia and was settled as pastor of the church in Salem, Roanoke County, and continued such until 1868. In the spring of 1863 the Doctor entered the army and became chaplain of the Fifty-fourth Virginia Regiment of Infantry, serving under Gen. S.B. Buckner, in his East Tennessee campaign. The next year he joined the Twenty-sixth Battalion of Gen. Echols' brigade and went through the great campaign of 1864, under Gen. John C. Breckinridge, first in the valley and then with Gen. Lee in his struggle with Grant, his battalion taking a prominent part in the bloody battle of Cold Harbor. In the fall of 1868 he returned to Kentucky and was installed as pastor of the Paris Presbyterian Church, and continued in that relation until July, 1880, when he was chosen chancellor of Central University, and removed to Richmond, Madison County. It is due to Dr. Blanton to say that he brought to the administration of the affairs of Central University a degree of energy, skill, and executive ability that have resulted in placing that institution on a sound footing and in a most favorable state of development as an institution for the higher education of young men. The number of students in attendance has increased from forty in 1880 to nearly 200 in 1887, and the amount of money raised during that period for permanent endowment, and other purposes, aggregates $180,000. The Doctor is known and respected throughout the State as a man of intense earnestness in his chosen work of building up the university, and his success is due not less to his wide reputation for integrity and his high Christian character, than to the energy and executive capacity which he has manifested in the development of its interests. As an educator of youth he stands in the foremost rank in the State; and to his success as a pastor the prosperity of the churches over which he presided as pastor, bear ample evidence. In October, 1857, he was united in marriage to Lizzie M. Irvine, of Boyle County, Ky., a daughter of Abraham D. and Mary P. (Irvine) Irvine, of Fayette County. They are of Scotch-Irish descent and their ancestors came to America in the same vessel with the McDowells. To the Doctor and Mrs. Blanton have been born six children: Mary, the wife of E.M. Dickson. Esq., a prominent young lawyer of Paris, KY.; Irvine, also an attorney at Cynthiana, Ky,; Rutherford, Edgar, Katie and Harry.

DR. WILLIAM R. EVANS, a native of Mecklenburg County, Va., was born Septembe 11, 826, and is a son of Ludwell and Jane B. (Hardy) Evans, who came to Nicholas County, Ky., the same year. In 1833 they moved to Mercer County, where Ludwell died in 1874, aged eighty-three years, his wife having died several years previously, aged sixty-three. Ludwell and his wife were of Welsh and English descent, respectively. At the age of fifteen William R. Evans, having completed the courses commonly taught in the schools in the neighborhood of father's farm, entered Bacon College at Harrodsburg, Ky. Having pursued the curriculum course of that institution for two or three years, he began to read medicine with Drs. Scales and McBrayer of Harrodsburg. He was a graduate from the medical department of the University of Louisville in 1850 and the following year was appointed assistant demonstrator of anatomy for the same institution and as such, with slight intermissions, served until the spring of 1855, also acting as private assistant to S. D. Gross, professor of surgery. He followed his profession in the interior of the State for awhile, and in the winter of 1862, went to Philadelphia, and further pursued his studies under Prof. Samuel D. Gross. He resumed active practice at Louisville, but failing health led to his purchasing a farm in the vicinity of Danville, where he combined agriculture with his medical practice. The Doctor was a charter member of the State Medical Society, is a member of the Boyle County Association, and has served repeatedly as delegate to the American Medical Association. He was married, October 18, 1855, to Mary J. Lee Forsythe, of Mercer County, daughter of Andrew and Narcissa (McAfee) Forsythe. Four children have been born to the Doctor and his wife, viz: Jennie Lee (now Mrs. J. S. Robinson), William L., Mary R. (now Mrs. C. T. Worthington) and Andrew F. The family are members of the Christian Church. In 1870 Dr. Evans removed to the city of Danville, his present place of residence, in order to avail himself of its superior educational advantages for his children.

Twin of George M. Forsythe. He was taken to live with his uncle, James Forsythe, when 11 yrs old. This is how it came to be, according to Rev. J. M. Travis: "His uncle John Forsyth of Missouri, on a visit to his father in Stockwell's infancy said to his mother: 'When I get married I want that boy.' The mother said, 'Well, you may have him,' hardly aware of what she was promising. After his marriage he sent for his boy, now about eleven years of age. The mother, with almost the tears of bereavement, adhered to her promise, and Stockwell's home henceforth was in Missouri."

WILLIAM S. FORSYTH

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Post-office, Strother). Mr. Forsyth is well known as one of the prominent agriculturist and leading, influential citizens of the county. He has a fine stock farm of 610 acres in South Fork township, well improved and stocked with good grades of cattle, hogs, horses, etc. In 1876 his friends ran him for the nomination for county judge, but he took little or no personal interest in the contest and was defeated by Judge Dooley for the nomination. Nevertheless, it is generally conceded that if he had made the efforts usually put forth in a canvass, he would have been successful, notwithstanding Judge Dooley is regarded as one of the most popular men of the county. Mr. Forsyth, like many and perhaps most of the substantial citizens of Monroe county, is a native of Kentucky and was born in Mercer county, October 20, 1837. He was the third in a family of eight children, being a twin with a brother who still lives in Mercer county, Ky., the children of Andrew and Narcissa (McAfee) Forsyth. His mother died in April, 1875. The father is still living on his farm in Mercer county, Ky., hale and hearty, at the advanced age of 87 years. William was adopted into the family of his uncle, John Forsyth, and was brought to Missouri by them when about 10 years of age. His uncle settled in Monroe county, where he became a prominent and well-to-do farmer, and died here in 1870. He was a man of much public spirit and took a deep interest particularly in education. In 1855 he, with his neighbors, Jacob Cox, William Bridgeford and Joseph Sproul, determined to have a public school carried on regularly in their neighborhood, and, if the public funds were not sufficient, to supply the deficiency out of their own means. This school was kept open regularly for a number of years and until it was merged into Prof. French Strother's present popular and successful private academy. Mr. Forsyth (the uncle) contributed regularly from $50 to $75 annually for the support of the school and threw open his house for pupils at a distance to board at a merely nominal cost while attending the school. A first-class teacher was secured and the school soon obtained a wide and enviable reputation for efficiency and thoroughness. After his uncle's death, which occurred August 22, 1870, Mr. Stockwell Forsyth, the subject of this sketch, took the former's place in the support and directory of the school, and has continued to fill it in a manner entirely creditable to the record his uncle made. His uncle had previously been school director, and Mr. Forsyth has been continuously elected, except two years, to the same position, in which he is still serving. In 1877 Mr. Forsyth, and the neighbors associated with him in the support and management of the school, secured the services of Prof. French Strother, an accomplished and successful teacher, and he was continued in the charge of it for about five years, when he resigned in order to build up his present private academy. Mr. Forsyth, with characteristic liberality and zeal for the educational interests of the community, kindly told Prof. French Strother to draw on him for all the funds necessary, which was done with becoming modesty and appreciation by the latter, only to the amount actually needed. This is now conceded to be one of the best private schools in the State, for which Mr. Forsyth is entitled to the credit, second only to Prof. French Strother himself. On May 18, 1871, Mr. Forsyth was married to Miss Anna M. Fulton, a daughter of John M. Fulton, who came to Missouri from South Carolina in 1868 and settled in Monroe county, where he and family still reside. Mr. and Mrs. Forsyth have two children, James Fulton and Mary J. Two others died in infancy. For a short time Mr. Forsyth was in the Confederate army during the war, but on being taken prisoner and sworn not to take up arms again, took no further part in the war. He is one of the most highly respected citizens of the county. For the last three years he has been county correspondent to the Commissioner of Agriculture, having been recommended by the Hon. A. H. Buckner, M.C. For a number of years he has been a ruling elder in the O.S. Presbyterian Church and has repeatedly been sent as delegate to her judicatories. Four years ago he was a delegate to the General Assembly which met at Charleston, S.C. Mr. Forsyth has paid but little attention to politics, but has used with commendable liberality his money, time and talent to everything that has tended to the mental and moral elevation of his community.

The monuments at New Hope, however, tell the story of pioneer families who brought citizenship to such a high standard in that neighborhood.'"

"M. LEANDER FORSYTHE, A.M., M.D., was born December 19, 1840. His father, Andrew Forsythe, was born in Mercer County, December 24, 1795. In 1820 he purchased on credit 190 acres of land, ten miles north of Harrodsburg, near Salvisa, but at his death left an estate of three farms, aggregating 590 acres, and worth $40,000, all of which he accumulated by his own management. He was married, in 1830, to Miss N. W. McAfee, a daughter of George and Anna (Hamilton) McAfee, both natives of Kentucky. Andrew Forsythe and his wife were distantly related, both being descendants of the celebrated McAfee family. To this marriage were born eight children: Mary J., wife of Dr. W. R. Evans, of Danville, Ky.; Robert B., a farmer, living near Pleasant Hill, Mo.; George M. and William S. (twins), the latter a farmer living near Paris, Mo., the former a farmer of Mercer County; M. Leander; Joseph, deceased, a farmer of Mercer County; Annie, wife of William Mayes, a farmer of Washington County, and Willette, deceased wife of Ed V. Ferguson, merchant of Harrodsburg. Andrew Forsythe, at his death, was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and departed this life August 13, 1886. His wife, who was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church, died in April, 1875, in the sixty-ninth year of her age. Matthew Forsythe, grandfather of M. Leander, was born in Ireland, immigrated to South Carolina, and came to Kentucky with Gen. Adair, and settled in Mercer County, where he was married to Miss Jane McAfee, daughter of Robert McAfee, and sister to Gen. Robert McAfee. His children were Robert, Andrew, John, WIlliam, Sally, James and Julia (Buford). Dr. Forsythe attended in youth the schools of his native county of Mercer, afterward a high school at Frankfort, and in the autumn of 1860 entered the junior class in Center College, of Danville, Ky., graduating there in June, 1863, with the degree of A. M. He immediately began the study of medicine under Dr. Evans, now of Danville. In 1863 he attended his first course of lectures in Brooklyn, N. Y., and graduated at Jefferson College, Philadelphia, in March, 1864. In the summer of 1864 he began practice in Harrison County, Ky., which he continued five years, removing to Harrodsburg in 1869, where, with the exception of four years' residence in Mississippi (1873-770), he has since resided, and practiced medicine and surgery. Dr. Forsythe owns and has managed a plantation in Jefferson County, Miss. June 27, 1871, he married Miss Elizabeth Griffing, daughter of J. D. and Elizabeth (Pearson) Griffing, the former a native of Jefferson County, Miss, the latter of Harrodsburg, Ky. Their marriage has been blessed with four children: Levinia Bush, Andrew Dunbar, Louise Tweed and Willette. Mr. and Mrs. Forsythe are member of the Presbyterian Church."

Hamilton McClung McAfee, private in Company I, 3d Kentucky Calvary, Morgan's command, died quietly at his home, in Mercer County, Ky., on July 31, 1920. He was born on May 12, 1842, in a family well known in Kentucky history. His father was William H. McAfee and his mother Indiana McAfee. He was a direct descendant from one of the five McAfee brothers, who, with their mother, Jane McAfee, were among the first in 1776 to cross the Cumberlands from Virginia to Kentucky and from the tangled mass of cane and dense forests of oak, which was then Kentucky, to carve a great State.

Hamilton McAfee answered the call to arms during the second year of the War between the States, joined Morgan's command, and remained with his beloved leader until his capture. He was very proud to relate that when the time came to cross the Ohio and start the now famous raid he was selected as one of the detail to precede the flying raiders and seize the ferryboat so that the command could cross later.

At the capture of General Morgan he was placed in Fort Douglas, at Chicago, where he remained until exchanged when Lee was defending Richmond. At the last surrender he walked from Virginia to Kentucky.

Something of the high ideals and sterling integrity of the Southern cause seemed to have been stamped upon the very souls of the men who fought for it. Hamilton McClung McAfee was no exception. His best eulogy may be pronounced in that he was a typical Confederate veteran.

Clinton F. Mcafee for many years was prominent in the affairs of Lebanon, was a representative and descendant of that famous McAfee family which came to Kentucky in the early part of 1773, about the same time as Daniel Boone and other noted pioneers, and made their settlement not far from Harrodsburg in Mercer County. All authorises agree in giving them a conspicuous place in early Kentucky history, not only because of their early arrival, but on account of their courage, resolution, their ability to defend and make homes in the hostile wilderness, and certain qualities in leadership that have been continued through their descendants. %

The late Clinton F. McAfee was born in Mercer County December 10, 1845. His remote ancestor was John McAfee, Sr., of Scotland, who married Elizabeth Montgomery. Later in the seventeenth century, when James II ascended the throne of Scotland and began the persecution of Protestants, John McAfee, Sr., was one of the leaders in the emigration to the North of Ireland, accompanied by members of the Montgomery, McMichael and McCown families. His son, John, Jr., went with him to Ireland and both of them enlisted in the army of the Prince of Orange and fought at the battle of the Boyne. John McAfee, Jr., at the age of thirty married Mary Rogers, and they had four sons and six daughters. The second son, James McAfee, was born in 1707 and in 1737 married Jane McMichael, who was termed the "flower of Erin." She was Irish and he was Scotch, and their children were real Scotch- Irish. This is the Jane McAfee, who is buried at Harrodsburg, from whom many of the McAfees are descended. James McAfee on coming to America brought three children, John. James and Malcolm. Malcolm was named for the highland chief, Malcolm McAfee, one time King of Scotland. Malcolm, Jr., died during the voyage. John and James arrived safely in America, and their brothers and sisters born in this country were George, Margaret, Robert, Mary, William and Samuel.

The pioneers in Kentucky in 1773 were James, George and Robert McAfee. The story of their coming and their location at McAfee Station or McAfee Springs, in Mercer County, where much of the land is still owned by their descendants, is part of the general history of Kentucky, upon which this sketch will not encroach. Of the brothers, George McAfee was the father of William McAfee, and William was in turn the father of Clinton F. McAfee.

Clinton F. McAfee attended school at Selvisa, and at the age of sixteen went to work in a drug store in that village, thoroughly mastering the business. Sub- seriuently, at Harrodsburg. he owned and operated a drug store for a number of years.

In 1875 Clinton McAfee married Miss Minnie Shuck, of Lebanon, daughter of John and Lucretia Shuck. Her father was a very talented and prominent Kentucky lawyer, born in 1808 and died in 1873, and the record of his work in the profession appears in many of the court records of Central Kentucky. His wife, Lucretia Finley, was born in 1812, was a woman of wonderful vitality and faculties and lived to the age of ninety-seven.

In 1876 Clinton McAfee removed to Lebanon, where he established a drug business and continued one of the leading merchants of that city until his death on February 4, 1890. He was very progressive in his citizenship, seeking whenever possible to advance the interests of his community as well as his own, and exemplified many of the strong characteristics of his ancestry.

His only child, Lucia, was born August 30, 1876, graduated from Potter College in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and on April 17, 1901, became the wife of Hugh Murry. Mr. Murry was also a druggist, and for many years conducted the leading business of the kind in Marion County, at Lebanon. He died August 8, 1920. Surviving him is his widow, Mrs. Murry, and their only daughter, Margaret Coleman, who was born March 28, 1902. This daughter seems to inherit much of the beauty ascribed to her remote Irish ancestor known as the "flower of Erin." She is a graduate of Sayre College at Lexington, and on June 30, 1920, became the wife of James E. Durham. Mr. Durham was born at Lebanon June 20, 1898, son of John R. and Maggie (Mayes) Durham. Maggie Mayes Durham descended from the Forsythes, who were allied with the McAfees in early generations, and the Forsythes <were also among the earliest Kentucky pioneers. James E. Durham is a successful business man of Lebanon, and is associated with his father in the management of a hardware and plumbing establishment at Lebanon and extensive farming interests. James E. Durham was educated at Center College, Danville.

"James Madison Lillard and his wife were devoted lovers. On the day that Margaret (Neeld) Lillard died, her husband, James Madison Lillard, who was himself ill, saw the undertakers entering his home. He had not yet been informed of his wife's death. He told them that he knew, without being told, just what had occurred. As he wept over his grief, he died within an hour after his wife's death, on Nov. 13, 1901. Mrs. Ada (Lillard) Farmer informs that they had so many devoted friends that a church funeral was had for this aged couple, and that as James Madison Lillard's coffin rolled slowly down one aisle, that of Margaret (Neeld) Lillard came down the other and they met at the altar just like a bride and groom. They were burie beside each other in the cemetery at Harrodsburg, Kentucky."

Caveat: Gravestone in Spring Hill Cemetery says death year is 1896 - he also isn't listed in the 1900 Census. So perhaps this story isn't true?
