WARD / FRENCH / SHARP / WATERS / MITCHELL: My direct line is Ward the other lines are names that were in the family by way of marriage. From the letters I have they all appear to have come from Va. Not sure of dates. One 1934 letter talks about a male Mitchell and wife getting their S.S. The age of the couple seemed to be 70s or 80s. Do any of these name mean any thing to anyone?

I am not directly related to this family but have an interest in them. Samuel Lawrence married Grace (Gracie) Sawyer [found in the 1910 Pe Ell Census]. Grace was the daughter of Benjamin Sawyer and Adeline Lina House. Benjamin was the brother of my GG Grandmother Millie Mariah Sawyer Newman. Samuel and Grace had at least two sons, Walter Lawrence and John Morton Lawrence. Walter was born about 1906. I have a picture of Walter with his Great Grandfather Wesley House.. this picture was sent to Benjamin's mother, Sarah Pearcy Sawyer in Keighly, KS in 1910. I inherited Sarah's and Milie's pictures and am trying to make sense of them by going through the census records.

Looking for information about Gelanie (Jelania) GREEN b.March 1874 in Harlan Co., KY, m. Patton ROGERS b. May 1862, VA. My grandfather, Jocephas GREEN (brother of Gelanie) moved to Little Falls (later Vader) Lewis Co., WA in 1905 because of the lumber industry. Other members of the GREEN family also moved, as well as KING and LYTTLE families. They had a store, hotel and saw mill in Little Falls. I don't know when Gelanie and Patton Rogers and their three children moved. My grandfather moved back to Kentucky in March 1913. We think everyone else moved back too, except, Gelanie and Patton ROGERS. The 1900 census shows that the 3 children were Margret b. May 1891, Green Y. b. March 1893, and Peter b. March 1895, all in KY. Info from family says they were Margaret, Tip and Babe, possibly nicknames for the boys. Tip ROGERS married Carlie SMITH and they had Frances and Marguerite. Frances ROGERS married Joe DERKACHT and they had a son Donald. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for a photo of what I believe to be the Cantwell Home, probably built around 1900. The home was a three story Victorian located near the intersection of Ferrier St. and McGlaughlin St. just south of Winlock. I last walked through the home,(abandoned at the time), around 1964. I recall marble fireplaces and high ceilings. It appeared to have been be a magnificent home in its day. Please contact me if you know where I might find a photograph of this home. Thank you.

William Helwig 29 Aug 2004
My great grandfather was Albert Helwig, an immigrant from Germany (I believe the city was "Kolberg" in Eastern Prussia) who came to the U.S. with his wife and daughter in the 1880s. He had been a professor, so the family legend has it, and came to the Centralia-Chehalis area and worked in the sawmills. Eventually he served in the management of a sawmill in Pe Ell because he could speak English, German and Polish.
He and his wife had five more children in the United States. Originally his name had been spelled "Hellwig" but they changed it at some point to "Helwig". His oldest two sons, Otto and Albert both served in the U.S. Army during and after World War I as interpreters. The youngest son, Arthur Helwig, was my grandfather.
Arthur's son Donald Helwig, currently of Longview, Washington is my father. I live in Salem, Oregon.
I have visited the graves of Albert and his wife Fredia in Pe Ell. The town has two cemeteries, and he and his wife's graves are next to one another in the (if memory serves) northwestern quadrant of the Polish/German Catholic cemetery. His gravestone reads Albert Hellwig, is shaped like a log and has an International Woodmen of the World reference on it.
I would love to be able to find out more about both Pe Ell and my family.

The Alfred Wilson in the 1910 Verndale Census is the brother of my grandfather, John Jackson Wilson. He left West Virginia with his wife, Catherine Norman Wilson who was my grandmother Rachel Norman Wilson's sister. The two brothers Wilson married Norman sisters. Alfred and Catherine moved to Lewis County, Washington along with or before or after Henry B. Norman and Louisa Cornell Norman moved there from West Virginia. Alfred is on the 1910 census. Henry & Louisa also had another daughter, sister to Rachel and Catherine, whose name was Alcinda (or Fanny) and who was married to Frank Roff who also migrated to Lewis County.
The daughter of Alfred and Catherine Norman Wilson is Hellen, who married Alderson Blankenship and also migrated to Lewis county, Wash. The Blankenships had several children: Opal Connor, Alden (became superintendent of schools), Alfred, Delia, Allen, Albert - Blankenships. The father, Alderson B. was a sheriff and had a dairy farm. I knew him as they visited New Jersey and W. Virginia a few times.
I last heard from Opal Connor many years ago. She may be deceased now.

I am looking for the location of "Skukus Creek." My great-grandmother Sarah Belle's (Cogdill)'s brother was killed by a falling tree on Skukus Creek. I haven't been able to figure out where it is, nor have any of my relatives. His name was Gilbert Frost, born between 1866-1870, and died at age 12 years. His parents were Elijah and Jane Green Frost.
I am also looking for the date and place of death of Elijah Frost. Elijah Frost, father of Sarah Belle Frost Cogdill, lived in Newaukum in 1878 with his wife and children. In the 1889 Pierce County Assessors Census, Jane and children were living in Tacoma, but no Elijah. Nobody seems to know when or where he died, but on 1900 census record, Jane was living with Sarah Belle and is listed as widow. I can't find his death anywhere.

Linda Lepper 8 Apr 2003
Linda contributed the following query regarding Ellen LEPPER, who is found in the 1910 Skookumchuck census with her mother-in-law, Elmina SABIN. "This is my husband's great-aunt, and the Elmina Sabin is his great-grandmother. The family is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery next to the Ipe's. Elmina had been married to Adam Lepper who died as a young man in Mesopotamia, Ohio and she later married the Sabin in Iowa. Is there someone who could help me with some possible obits in your area. Franklin Dwight Lepper died just before the census was taken in 1910, he is the husband to Ellen. Also I have not been able to find a death cert on Elmina but know she is buried next to her son. There were some fires in funeral homes and records were lost so assume they were lost before they were filed with the state. I do believe Elmina died between 1910-1915. Ellen is found in Portland around 1915 and her death occurred about then and Elmina was not with her in Portland so I am assuming Ellen moved to Portland after her mother-in-law died. I am hoping there was possibly an obit on her and will pay for help. Thank you in advance."

I have been researching the Bukovina Germans who came to this country in the 1800's and am interested in any information on the Kellers. Recently, I have become aware of a Friedrich Keller who immigrated from Illischestie, Austria, around the same time as Michael and Katherina Keller. Michael and Katherina were my Great Grandparents and are buried in the cemetery in Boistfort, WA. To the best of my knowledge, Friedrich went to Brazil and I am wondering if anyone knows what happened to him and his heirs/family. I have read Mary Lee Rose's account of "The Bukovina Germans Living in Lewis County Washington" and found it incredibly informative and interesting. I nearly fell off my chair when I found the web site. I look forward to hearing from anyone who can shed some light on this mystery. Also, anyone who has stories to share of the other Kellers. Thank You,

John George Dunlap and wife Mrs. Rae (Sansburn) Dunlap.
John George Dunlap was one of 13 or 14 children, born in Ireland. J. G. (as he was known) and his wife Rae Sansburn settled in Chehalis, Lewis County, Washington for a short period of time before going to Pe Ell. J.G. had a General Merchandise store, which actually burned down in 1926. Then he and his son, Lee operated the first bank in Pe Ell. The bank went under in 1929 and he suffered great losses. He never worked again. After his death he was cremated and his ashes spread in the wooded area around Pe Ell. On June 8, 1903, John George Dunlap purchased Lot 5, Block 5 in the Old Pe Ell Cemetery.
1910 - 1911 Abstracts from Lewis County Directories show him with dry goods, furniture, stoves, ranges, tinware, carpets, hardware and building material. Sadie L. is listed as a clerk for J.G. Dunlap.
1914 - 1915 lists John G. and Ray S, dry goods, $2,340 value.
1917 - 1918 lists him and Ray S dry goods $2,340 value again.
1922 - 1923 lists he and Ray general merchandise valued at $6,860.
1927 - 1928 lists he and Ray President of Pe Ell State Bank. Their daughter Margaret is listed also.
1931 - 1932 lists E. Lee and Fannie M, then John G. and Ray S. and Margaret as a student.
1941 - 1942 lists John and Ray living at 1361 1st St. in Pe Ell.
The 1910 census for Pe Ell, Lewis County shows John age 50 and Mrs. Ray Dunlap age 45 and children' Sadie age 18, Lee age 11, and Margaret age 1. John and Rae have been married 19 years. She had 4 children, three of whom are still living.
1920 Pe Ell, Lewis County census shows John G. Dunlap age 69, wife Rachel age 55, son Edward age 21, and daughter Margurate age 11. He immigrated to the US in 1870 with his father. They lived on 6th Ave in Pe Ell and were the 183 dwelling visited by the census taker. He is listed as a merchant. Both his parents were Irish as was he. Rachel's parents were listed as Canadian and Irish. (SD 3, ED 152, Sheet 8B). She wrote articles for the Chehalis Bee Nugget; She was a self liberated woman. She taught herself to type through a correspondence course and then became the Pe Ell Correspondant for the Chehalis "B Nugget", the local newspaper. Rae and J. G. had lived in Pe Ell for 47 years at the time of her death.
Robert and Lovina (Sansburn) Ross of Cloquato:
Marriage Reg# 9880 - 1892, Robert Ross, 20, res. Fullerton Twp., born Fullerton Twp., bachelor, farmer, parents Edward Ross and Sarah Ross married Lovina Sansburn, 20, res. St. Mary's, born Blanshard Twp., parents William Sansburn and Margaret Moore Sansburn. Wit: Robert Sansburn of St. Mary's and Mary (Weller) Sansburn of St. Mary's. Took place 13 Apr 1892 in St. Mary's, Perth Co., Ontario. (St. Mary's, Fullerton Twp. and Blanshard Twp. all in Perth Co.)
She (Kate) had family relatives whose names were Lawrence & Dorothy Aust. They lived on a dairy farm in Curtis, WA (on Wildwood Road). Their sons were Ralph and Philip Aust . Another bit of information I was able to retrieve on Robert Ross was the name of two of his pallbears, Melvin Wilson (brother-in-law) and his son Douglas Wilson. I am trying to locate the parents of Kate whose maiden name may have actually been Wilson and her marriage date to Robert Ross. I think her first husband's name may have been Frank Aust and that he died, so she then married Robert Ross. Also, Kate had a daughter Alice.

Scott McQuigg Nov. 3, 2002
I am descendant of the McQuigg/Balfour lines of the Ethel and Cowlitz precinct census listings of 1910. Miner McQuigg was my great grandfather, and his eldest son, Henry was my grandfather. On the Balfour side, Hannah Weatherby-Balfour was my great-great grandmother. She was married to Patrick Fergueson Balfour, and lived on the upper Cowlitz River, in what is now the Salkum, Wa. mailing district. I am attempting reasearch on the following names from the Cowlitz/Ethel areas: McQuigg, Balfour, Spencer, and Hefley families. As listed in the 1910 census, the McQuigg's and the Balfours are inter-related, as are the Spencer's and Hefley families, all from that area between the early 1880's to present, where there are still McQuigg's living today (my grandmother who is now 91 and my father, in his mid-50's). If you have, or know anyone that has information about any of these families, I would appreciate this note being forwarded to them. I am of the Miner H. McQuigg / Adelaide Victoria Balfour-McQuigg family, who had Henry McQuigg. He married Clarice Louise Spencer (still living...Henry deceased in 1979) who's parents were Tracy (Trace) Spencer and Anna Hefley-Spencer. The deceased listed are all in Salkum/Mt. Hope cemetary, St. Francis Catholic Mission Cemetery, as well as the Winlock Cemetery. Am just getting started into all of this, but have a lot of info in some areas, and very little in others. Thank you in advance for your time and for any help you can offer.

A great misfortune happened and Lensy sent Daisy away and she was only seen one more time by her children. We think she may have returned to Washington State near Longview or Chehalis and possibly married to a man by the name of "Black". Daisy's daughter is now in her mid 90s and would like to have some closure in what happened to her mother. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

CAVENESS family: I'm looking for info on the Caveness family which resided in Centralia in the early 1900's. Clyde Clarence Caveness was b. 1887, d. 1967 in Centralia, and came to Centralia in 1908 to go into business with his uncle, Alfred W. Caveness. They had "The New York Store" in downtown Centralia. Apparently there was another relative, John Caveness, who built the Caveness "mansion" still standing on Caveness Drive, near the Mountain View Cemetery. I'm doing research on the stagecoach days of southwest Washington, and the Caveness house was reportedly a stage stop around 1899. The City of Centralia has been given the harness-drying tower that was used to dry harnesses of the horses that pulled the stages. We will move the tower to Borst Park and restore it. I'd really appreciate any info verifying that John Caveness built the house, and that it was used as a stage stop.

I am looking for Harry Edwin Town. We do not know this person but he would
be my husband's grandfather. This is the grand total of what we know:
Harry Edwin Town is supposed to be his full name. b. Centralia, WA (Lewis County ?) no year listed - according to my sister-in-law from something she saw in a newspaper article. I have not seen it. I use the formula of a new generation every 20 years to estimate a birth of a parent. I'm looking at 1870's (if age 20-30 or early 1880's if he was the average age of 18-20 when he married. However, Emma was about 26 at her marriage. Harry married 21 Sep 1897 in ?? to Emma Alice Owen b. 1871 Carlinville, IL. Dau of Ephrem L. Owen - I have his tree. My husband knew this grandmother but not the grandfather. My husband remembers his father going to the Chicago, IL area to see him just before he died in 1950-1963 time-frame. Two children were born to this marriage: Burr Town in 1901 in Spirit Lake, IA and a Dorothea? b. probably IA. but she is not on the 1910 census for Spirit Lake, IA and could be from the second marriage. Emma and Burr are on the 1910 census IA. A second marriage for Emma produced another son with a Wellemeyer living in the area. We knew that son and his son. That is the extend of my knowledge. We do not know if Harry married a second time. I assume he probably did. I could be wrong.

Sharon Fitzpatrick Friday, February 2, 2001
I am looking for information on my husband's father, Elmer Grant Fitzpatrick. According to my husband's birth certificate, Elmer was born in Swofford, Washington 1/28/1904. I do not believe that Elmer's parents were in the Swofford area very long. His mother Margaret Cameline Moody was in Watauga County, NC in the 1900 census. She was born in Beaver Dam, Watauga, NC 11/7/1883. His father, Will Fitzpatrick was born in Calaveras County, CA 9/30/1872. I have no idea why they were in Swofford when Elmer was born. They left Swofford fairly soon after Elmer's birth. I believe they went by covered wagon to Grant's Pass, Oregon and Bakersfield, California before stopping in Arizona where Elmer's younger sisters were born: Ula Mae was born 2/9/1906 and Ruby Estil was born 6/15/1911. The family later went on to Las Cruces, New Mexico. I would love to find out more about them while they were in Washington
State. Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.

Dennis Boswell Saturday, January 6, 2001
I would to post a query for a relative of mine who was born in Lewis County ca. 1886-1887. Her name is Dorothy May Boswell. From her daughter's CA birth certificate, I learned that Dorothy May Boswell was age 31 in 1918 and was born in Chehalis (spelled "Chalis" on the birth certificate), State of Washington. That would suggest a birth year in Chehalis, Lewis County of 1886-1887. I am trying to identify Dorothy May Boswell's mother and father. From family tradition alone, I am told her father was one George Charles Boswell and her mother might have had the given name of Leila or Lelli with a
maiden name of Lind or Lang.
